A Look At What Is Happening In Cleveland State Athletics

Vikings Take To The Road. . .

Men's Basketball Is The Only Team To Play At Home In A Full Week Of Action

The winter sports season continues this week with the majority of the Viking teams seeing action on the road.

The men's basketball team is the only squad that will compete at home, hosting Horizon League-leading Wright State on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center before traveling to Youngstown State on Saturday (Jan. 20).  The YSU game will be televised throughout Ohio on SportsTime Ohio with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The women's basketball team is in Wisconsin for a pair of league games, playing at UW-Green Bay on Thursday (Jan. 18) and at UW-Milwaukee on Saturday (Jan. 20).

The wrestling team continues its non-league slate, having dual meets scheduled on Sunday (Jan. 21) against Ohio, Air Force and host Ashland at the Ashland Duals.

The tennis teams will begin their respective winter schedules at Michigan State this weekend.  The women face the Spartans on Friday (Jan. 19) while the men play a dual meet against MSU on Saturday (Jan. 20).

The fencing teams will play in its first team competition since the opening week of December when the Vikings compete in the Notre Dame Duals in Notre Dame, Ind.  The two-day event will be held Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 20-21 with CSU slated to play as many as eight dual meets during the weekend.

Men's Basketball Hosts Wright State, Plays At Youngstown State. . .

Vikings Coming Off Home Win Over Detroit

The men's basketball team continues Horizon League play this week with one game at home and another close to home.  The Vikings will host league-leading Wright State at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 18) before traveling to Youngstown State on Saturday (Jan. 20) for a 7:00 p.m. contest that will be televised live in SportsTime Ohio.

Cleveland State (7-12, 1-5) used a career-high 21-point outburst from sophomore Bahaadar Russell to claim its first league victory of the year, a 63-61 decision over Detroit on Saturday (Jan. 13) in the Wolstein Center.

"It was good to finally get a league win last week," head coach Gary Waters said.  "Our record really isn't reflective of our performance this year because we have been in every game and one or two small factors have been the difference between winning and losing.  We just need to continue to do a better job of executing, especially in the second half in order for some of those losses to become wins."

Women's Basketball Makes Wisconsin Swing. . .

Tough Road Schedule Has Vikings Playing The Top Two Horizon League Teams

The women's basketball team (5-13, 2-3 HL) continues its January road tour of the Horizon League with a swing through Wisconsin to face the top two teams in the conference. The Vikings will begin the trip by battling league-leading UW-Green Bay on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. CST. The Phoenix has won 10 in a row and is off to a 4-0 start in conference action. CSU will then head a couple of hours south to square off against UW-Milwaukee (3-1 HL) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CST. The Vikings have not won a road league game in the Dairy State since the 1998-99 campaign.

"We're going to have to be at the top of our game this week," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "Green Bay and Milwaukee were picked to finish 1-2 in the league and they are playing like it so far this year. Nikki [Thomas] and Chenara [Wilson] have really stepped up the past couple of games in the post and we're really going to need strong efforts from them again."

The Vikings missed a golden opportunity to put together their first winning streak of the season, dropping a 64-61 decision to Detroit on Thursday (Jan. 11) in the Wolstein Center. CSU led by nine at the break (30-21) after closing the half with an 11-2 burst. However, the Titans used a 13-0 run midway through the final stanza to claim control of the game. The Vikings missed three opportunities to tie the game late, but missed their last three field goal attempts and had a critical turnover with 44 seconds remaining. Kailey Klein led CSU with 16 points and four assists, while Nicole Thomas (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Chenara Wilson (12, 10) both notched double-doubles.

Wrestling Heads To Ashland Duals. . .

The Cleveland State wrestling team heads to the Ashland Duals for three dual meets on Sunday, Jan. 22. The Vikings (4-2) will begin the day at 10:00 a.m. against Air Force and will compete against host Ashland and Ohio at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., respectively.

"We are starting to put everything together," head coach Jack Effner said. "We have been working really hard but we're not quite where we want to be just yet. Fortunately, we have a lot of time left to get ready for the EWL schedule."

The Vikings defeated Eastern Michigan, 18-15, on Saturday (Jan. 13) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Sophomore heavyweight Rashard Goff started the meet with a pin and junior 125-pounder Ryan Riggs won by decision to give CSU a 9-0 lead. Junior Mike Hurley (13-7 at 141) and sophomore Victer Crenshaw (19-5 at 157) each won decisions to make it 15-6. Sophomore Nate Kmetz (4-12 at 174) also won a key bout, 6-4, that ended up being the difference in the final score.

Crenshaw, who was named EWL Wrestler of the Week after going 3-0 at the Purdue Duals last week, leads the team with a 19-5 record with four pins and four tech falls. Goff is 19-9 while senior Ryan Hurley is 17-7.

Men's Swimming Off After Beating Xavier & Duquesne. . .

The Cleveland State men's swimming team has the week off after hosting a quad dual against Duquesne, Xavier and Notre Dame for its first action of the new year on Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Busbey Natatorium. The Vikings (9-3) return to action with a home dual against Miami (OH) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m.

"We won five events against some good competition," head coach Wally Morton said. "For us to have that kind of performance is outstanding."

The Vikings won by large margins over Duquesne (157-69) and Xavier (168-58) but fell to Notre Dame (154-87) for a 2-1 showing. CSU received a big lift by adding freshman Jakub Dobies, who broke the school record in the 100 breast (55.29) in his debut. Dobies, a native of Plock, Poland, also competed in the 200 medley relay and 50 free.

Senior Chris Dalman continued his dominance in the diving events, winning the one- and three-meter dives with scores of 349.72 and 364.27, respectively. Junior Dave Duecker won the 400 IM (4:02.55) and sophomore Marko Milenkovic placed first in the 100 free (46.48).

Women's Swimming Idle Until Jan. 26. . .

The Cleveland State women's swimming team is idle this week after hosting a triple dual against Duquesne and Xavier on Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Busbey Natatorium.  CSU (3-8) will return to action against St. Francis (PA) on Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:00 p.m.

"After our training trip to Florida, I was anxious to see how we would react," head coach Mike Lehto said.  "We were banged up a little bit and tired and not everyone recovers the same way."

The Vikings fell to Duquesne (152-48) and Xavier (129.5-70.5) in their first action since competing in the Miami Invitational on Dec. 2.  Senior Marianne Lionell was the only Viking to win an event, taking the 100 breast in 1:08.69.  Lionell, competing in the 100 fly for the first time this year, posted a team top time in the event (1:01.18). Junior Lesley Jones added a third place finish in the 100 free (55.82).

Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season At Michigan State. . .

The Cleveland State men's tennis team will begin the spring portion of its season on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Michigan State. The dual contest with the Spartans is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.

"Our men's team made some noise against Michigan State last year with some close matches," head coach Brian Etzkin said.  "We're trying to better that performance and put some points on the board."

The Vikings (3-0) had a very successful fall season, placing three players into the ITA Regional Tournament and five of the team's six players had singles records over .500.

Freshmen Phil Orno (11-4) and Ryan Hamning (12-5) lead the team in second and third singles spots, respectively, and were nearly unbeatable at No. 1 doubles, going 10-1 with their only loss coming at the ITA.  Sophomore Rob West went 8-2 at No. 6 singles.

Women's Tennis Travels To Michigan State. . .

After nearly three months out of competition, the Cleveland State women's tennis team returns to action against Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 19 at 3:00 p.m.

"We have had some injuries but we're very excited to finally take the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said.  "We haven't had much practice, but either has Michigan State, so the playing field should be pretty level."

Senior Sarah Galon (8-5) is the team's best player, leading the team in wins at No. 1 singles.  She also played No. 1 doubles with fellow senior Morgan Ungerott during the fall and the duo went 8-3.  Sophomore Kristen Chamberlain (6-5) and freshman Charlotte Gibbons (5-4) are also both over .500 in singles play.

Fencing Returns To Dual Meet Action. . .

The fencing team travels to Notre Dame on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 20-21) for its first dual meet competition of the semester. After getting back in the swing of things at the North America Cup last week, the Vikings are scheduled to square off against Air Force, Cal State Fullerton, Detroit, Notre Dame, Ohio State, San Diego, Stanford and Wayne State. The men's team is off to an impressive 8-1 start, while the women are just as solid at 6-2.

"After the start we got off to last semester, I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do in our first dual meet of the new year," head coach Jim Sager said. "Notre Dame is always one of the top teams in the country and the rest of the competition will really test us as well."

Bahaadar Russell - The men's basketball sophomore made the most of his second career start, scoring a career-high 21 points - 11 more points than he scored the entire season - in the win over Detroit on Saturday.
