Jan. 27, 2004 Cleveland - The Vikings Take To The Road. . . Six CSU Squads In Action This Week With Only Two Home Events Planned The athletic schedule for CSU teams goes on the road this week as only two home athletic events are planned. The women's basketball team, which is tied with Detroit for first place in the Horizon League, takes a break from league play when they host host IPFW on Monday night (Jan. 26). CSU resumes league play at UW-Green Bay on Monday, Feb. 2. The only other home event this week has the women's tennis team resuming play against Toledo on Saturday (Jan. 31) at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River. The men's basketball team plays road contests at Butler on Thursday (Jan. 29) and Wright State on Saturday (Jan. 31); wrestling is at Ohio University on Friday (Jan. 30) and fencing competes in a two-day tournament at Notre Dame (Jan. 31-Feb. 1). The men's tennis is on the road for a pair of matches, playing at Youngstown State on Saturday and St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Men's Basketball Travels To Illinois-Chicago. . . Schedule Slows Down For Vikings This Week After Playing 6 Games In 13 Days The Viking men's basketball team (4-15, 0-7) - or what's left of it after a series of injuries and other problems - takes to the road this week trying to end a 13-game losing streak in two venues it has historically struggled in. CSU plays Butler on Thursday night (Jan. 29) in Hinkle Fieldhouse, a building where the Vikings are 0-9 lifetime. On Saturday, CSU plays at Wright State where the Vikings are 6-12 but have dropped five straight decisions. The Viking roster has been decimated over the last month, leaving first-year head coach Mike Garland with just seven relatively healthy scholarship players. Despite the short bench and inexperienced lineup, CSU nearly upended Youngstown State on Saturday (Jan. 24), leading at half before eventually falling, 61-59. "I am proud of the way our team has handled all of the adversity that has come this year," Garland said. "Most teams would have given up by now but the players we have left have stepped up and worked even harder to overcome the losses. It is a great example of the character of this team and its desire to win." Senior Jermaine Robinson and junior Omari Westley continue to lead the team. Robinson ranks second in the Horizon League with a 20.7 scoring average, including a dozen 20-point outbursts, while Westley leads the loop in rebounding (8.7) while also scoring 15.4 points a game. Women's Basketball Hosts IPFW On Monday First Place Vikings Takes A Break From Horizon League Play The Viking women's basketball team welcomes IPFW to the Convocation Center on Monday night for its final non-conference game of the season. The contest is the third in five days for the Vikings and brings to a close a four-game homestand. CSU has defeated the Mastodons in each of the four previous meetings, winning by an average of 20.8 points per game. "We have yet to win all three games in a stretch like this and it's important to master that if we want to win the conference championship," head coach Kate Peterson said. "This is a good experience because it teaches us how to prepare quickly and perform well with little rest. Having said that, it will be nice to have a week to practice and work on certain things to get ready for three league games next week, two of which are on the road." Cleveland State extended its home winning streak to five games with a pair of wins in distinctly different fashion. On Thursday, CSU defeated Loyola 80-73 in a shootout, using a 20-5 run out of halftime to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Erin Martin paced the Vikings with a career-high 25 points, equaling the school record with seven three-pointers. Two days later, CSU proved it could win ugly, upending Illinois-Chicago 57-55 to sweep the season series for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign. A late 9-0 run erased a seven-point deficit and senior Ashley Schrock provided the winning margin with a pair of free throws with 23 seconds remaining. Just three minutes earlier, she became the 17th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Senior Shannon Sword led all players with 21 points for the second consecutive game and her league-leading 10th time this season. The conference's leading scorer at 18.9 ppg, Sword needs just 28 points to top the 1,000-point plateau herself. Wrestlers Try To Get Back On Winning Track At Ohio Vikings (6-6, 0-2 EWL) Head To Athens For Final Non-League Match Of The Season The CSU wrestling team will head to Ohio University on Fri., Jan. 30, for the final non-league dual match of the season. The Vikings, winners of four straight to open the season, will be trying to get on a bit of a roll heading into the final five matches of the Eastern Wrestling League season, and will try to get started against the Bobcats. In their last team action, the Vikings dropped a pair of matches at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals at the CSU Convocation Center on Jan. 17. CSU fell to No. 4 Minnesota, 35-3, before losing a heartbreaking 21-16 match to West Virginia in the consolation round. In open competition, freshman Mike Hurley and senior Matt DePolo each earned placing finishes at the CSU Open on Sat., Jan. 24 at Woodling Gym. Hurley finished second in the 141 bracket, finishing 3-1 on the day, while DePolo was fourth in the 149 bracket, winning five straight matches after losing his opening round bout. Both Tennis Teams Resume Play After the men's tennis team returned from the winter break last weekend with matches at Ohio State and Michigan State, both squads will be back in action this weekend. The men return to the road to take on Youngstown State in a key Horizon League match on Sat., Jan. 31, before facing St. Bonaventure a day later. The women, meanwhile, return from their three-month hiatus by hosting Toledo on Sun., Feb. 1, at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River, Ohio. The men took on a pair of ranked opponents last weekend, falling to No. 17 Ohio State on Fri., Jan. 23, and No. 56 Michigan State on Sat., Jan. 24, by identical 7-0 scores. The two losses drop the men's record to 1-4 on the season. The women, meanwhile, are seeking their second win of the season, a win that would tie them for last season's win total. Compliance Corner. . . Did You Know? Perhaps the toughest question to answer is "what is an extra benefit"? Simply put, an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of CSU's athletic interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit that is not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. However, not all benefits are considered violations if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to all CSU students or to a particular segment of CSU's student body (e.g., foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability. Examples of benefits that may be violations are free or reduced-cost services, discounts or credits, loan of money, entertainment services. If you are interested in providing a benefit to a student-athlete or the student-athlete's friend or family member, please remember to "Ask Before You Act" by contacting the Compliance Office for Athletics at 216-687-4756 to ensure that the benefit is permissible. Failure to do so may result in the ineligibility of the student-athlete and your disassociation from Cleveland State Athletics. Viking High Fives 1. Swimming Seniors: The 10 Viking seniors from both the men's and women's teams went out in style over the weekend, knocking off Niagara in their final home meet of the season. 2. Women's Basketball: They have won eight of their last 11 games to get above .500 for the first time this year and more importantly, own a share of the Horizon League lead with a 6-1 record. 3. Jermaine Robinson: The men's basketball senior has been CSU's scoring leader all year, posting his Horizon League-leading 12th 20-point game against Youngstown State last week. 4. Ashley Schrock: It wasn't her best game of the year, but she did save the best for last. She went over the 1,000 point mark during one trip down the floor and minutes later, added the game-winning free throws. The Week Ahead For The Vikings
