CLEVELAND, Ohio - One hundred and thirty eight student-athletes, representing every intercollegiate sport sponsored at Cleveland State University, were recognized for their academic accomplishments at the 18th annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon, which was held on Thursday afternoon (April 17) in the Wolstein Center.

"The Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon celebrates what intercollegiate athletics is all about," CSU Director of Athletics Lee Reed said. "We are quick to recognize the athletic achievements of our student-athletes but may be guilty of taking for granted their academic accomplishments. This luncheon allows us to take a moment to congratulate our student-athletes who are able to successfully maintain a balance between athletics and academics."

The 138 student-athletes were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better through the end of the fall, 2007 semester. The baseball team, which had just seven student-athletes honored a year ago, led all CSU sports with 19 honorees. Women's soccer was second with 13, followed by volleyball (12) and softball (10).

Several additional awards were handed out at the luncheon.

Men's tennis captain Brad Groleski (Springboro, OH) received the 10th annual John McLendon Award, which is given to the student-athlete who best represents the ideals and personal philosophy of McLendon, a former CSU men's basketball coach who is an enshrinee in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Groleski, who serves as the vice-president of the Student-Athletic Advisory Council, has battled through wrist and back injuries that should ended his collegiate career to become a all-league honoree. Groleski was the recipient of the Horizon League's Herb Fostor Sportsmanship Award in 2007.

Women's fencer Olwen Conant (Lakewood, OH) received the President's Award as the graduating senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Conant has a 3.80 GPA and will graduate next month with a degrees in mathematics and physics.

The "Best of the Best" Team Award, which is given to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the department, went to volleyball. The Horizon League champions who earned the school's first-ever NCAA bid this past fall, had a 3.58 team GPA with all 13 student-athletes boasting at least a 3.0.

Thirty-two student-athletes received additional recognition for being a member of the Dean's List during every term they have attended at CSU, including women's tennis standout Morgan Ungerott, who has been on the Dean's List for nine consecutive terms, and Samantha Casey (Women's Soccer), Alma Pitchford (Women's Fencing), Thomas Sadd (Men's Soccer), Lindsay Sellers (Women's Tennis), Mel Snyder (Volleyball), Christine Vogelgesang (Women's Tennis) and Conant, who have each been on the list for seven consecutive terms.

Renamed in 2006 to honor former CSU Director of Athletics John Konstantinos, the event has been held every year since 1991. It has burgeoned from a class of 41 honorees that year to over 100 in each of the last eight years.
