Volleyball Travels to Robert Morris Before Hosting Own Invitational
CSU Wins Four Matches to Open Season

Cleveland State continues its early season slate when the Vikings travel to Robert Morris for a nonleague contest on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to host the CSU Invitational Presented by the Crowne Plaza City Centre. CSU will play Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 4) at 7:00 p.m. before matches against Syracuse at 11:00 a.m. and Michigan State at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 5).

"We had a pretty good start to our season at La Salle over the weekend, but there are still some things that we have to work on to get where we need to be," head coach Chuck Voss said. "I thought we did a good job of staying in our system over the weekend and it was nice to be able to play a lot of players, especially the underclassmen."

The Vikings began the 2009 season by winning the La Salle Invitational with a perfect 4-0 mark as all four wins came via  3-0 sweeps. CSU opened the tournament with wins over Air Force and Canisius on Friday, Aug. 28, before sweeping Farleigh-Dickinson and La Salle on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Sophomore setter Jordan Goad was selected as the tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 10.4 assists and 2.2 digs per set, while directing the CSU offense to a .275 hitting percentage in the four matches. Goad recorded a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs in the win over Canisius.

Senior Beth Greulich also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, while freshman Kara Koch stood out in her first collegiate matches, leading the Vikings with 36 kills in the four matches.

Viking Men's Soccer Set For Home Opener
CSU Will Face St. Bonaventure In First Regular Season Contest

The CSU men's soccer squad is ready to begin regular season play this Tuesday (Sept. 1) when they face off against St. Bonaventure at 4:00 p.m.. The match will mark the 12th time that the two teams have met in the regular season, the seventh time meeting on Krenzler Field.

After Tuesday's match the Vikings will travel to the west coast where they will participate in the UC Irvine College Classic. They will square off against Santa Clara on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 5:00 p.m. and UC Irvine on Monday (Sept. 7) at 2:00 p.m., both times are eastern standard.

The Vikings are coming off a preseason were they had a record of 0-1-1. They lost 4-2 to Capital and tied 0-0 with Bowling Green. In the draw with Bowling Green, CSU had four close calls all by different players, including seniors Josh Williams and Slavisa Ubiparipovic and freshmen Admir Suljevic and Aaron Adkins

Ubiparipovic and Suljevic's opportunities came on free kicks during the second half, with Ubiparipovic's hitting the crossbar and Suljevic's skimming the post to the left. Williams had a shot that went just far enough right to hit the post and Adkins put a header right into the hands of the goalie.

"The preseason has been good for us to see where we are offensively and defensively," said head coach Ali Kazemaini. "We are hoping to put everything together on Tuesday, then go out west and see what we can do in the UC Irvine tournament."

Women's Soccer Heads To Eastern Kentucky & Ohio
Vikings Are 1-2 After OT Win At Kent State

The women's soccer team continues the non-conference portion of its 2009 season this week when the Vikings play two matches in two different states over Labor Day weekend.  CSU opens the week with a 5:00 p.m. match at Eastern Kentucky on Friday (Sept. 4) and then concludes play against Ohio University at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Vikings split a pair of matches last week, rallying from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 overtime win at Kent State on Friday (Aug. 28) before dropping a 2-1 decision on Sunday to Eastern Illinois at Krenzler Field.

"A 1-1 week isn't bad, but after playing so well against Kent State on Friday and having the lead late against Eastern Illinois, it is disappointing to come away with a split," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said.  "We showed a lot of heart against Kent State because in the past, we haven't done well when we have had to come from behind on the road.  We played pretty good defense for most of the week, but some lapses late cost us on Sunday."

The win over Kent State came in the 100th match in women's soccer history, improving CSU to 4-3-3 all-time in matches decided in overtime.  Freshman Valerie Stahl scored on the first successful penalty kick in school history and sophomore

Natalie Daniels provided the game-winner with just 14 seconds left in overtime.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute against Eastern Illinois when Marley Greiner tallied her first goal of the season, but the Panthers scored twice in the final 12 minutes to secure the win.

Men's Golf Starts Fall Season at Missouri Invitational

The two-time defending Horizon League champion men's golf team begins the 2009 fall season when the Vikings compete in the 54-hole Turning Stone Invitational at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. The University of Missouri is serving as the host school for the event.

"We once again have the personnel to have a successful season," third-year head coach Steve Weir said. "We will be competing in several tournaments with deep and talented fields and that will no doubt help as we work toward our ultimate goal of winning another league title."

Weir, who has captured the last two Horizon League Coach of the Year Awards, returns a majority of the nucleus from last year's league championship team, including seniors Patrick Elber (76.0 scoring average in 2008-09) and Kyle Cobb (75.6) and junior Kent Monas (75.4) who will fill out the top three spots in the lineup.

The Vikings will have to make-up for the loss of two-time league championship medalist Jake Scott, but have plenty of options, including junior Kellen Erdman, sophomore James Boxley and freshmen Alex Michalowski and Michael Klaric.

Cross Country Opens Season at Bill Sudeck Classic

Fifth-year head coach Joe Jaketic will debut the 2009 Viking cross country squad on Saturday, Sept. 5, when CSU competes at the Bill Sudeck Classic hosted by Case Western. The race will begin at 11:45 a.m. at Squire Valleview Farm.

"I am really excited to get out and start the season," Jaketic said. "The team has been training extremely hard and I think we have the potential to improve from our performances last season. We are once again fighting some injuries and may not be able to put our best squad out on Saturday, but that will give others a chance to showcase what they can do."

The Vikings will be led by sophomore Brittany Elmlinger, who was CSU's first or second finisher in all nine races last season, including a 26th finish at the Horizon League Championship. CSU will also get a boost from the return of sophomore Allison Craine who redshirted last season with a stress fracture in her leg. Two years ago, Craine was the Vikings top finisher in every event.

Viking High Fives

Jordan Goad: The volleyball sophomore was named the MVP of the La Salle Invitational after leading the Vikings to a 4-0 mark.

Women's Soccer: The Vikings match against Eastern Illinois on Sunday (Aug. 30) drew a record crowd of 492 to Krenzler Field and helped to raise more than $1,000 for the Taussig Cancer Center at The Cleveland Clinic.
