Road Trip Continues For Vikings. . .
All Eight Fall Sports In Action; Women's Soccer Only Team At Home

The busiest week of the fall schedule is ahead for the Vikings as all eight fall sports are in action with all but one event being played on the road.

Fresh off a pair of road wins last week, the women's soccer team (2-3) will play a Friday (Sept. 14) match at Akron before returning home to host Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 16) beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.

The men's soccer team heads west to Las Vegas where the Vikings will face Cal State Northridge (Friday, Sept. 14) and Cal Poly (Sunday, Sept. 16) as part of the UNLV adidas Invitational.

The volleyball team (7-4), who is picked to finish second in the Horizon League this year, opens league play with road matches at Wright State on Friday (Sept. 14) and Butler on Saturday (Sept. 16).

Both golf teams are in tournament play as well. The women open the week by playing at the Youngstown State Invitational on Sunday-Monday (Sept. 10-11) and finish the week at the Western Illinois Autmn Invite on Sept. 16-17. The men's team opens their fall schedule at the John Piper Intercollegiate at Bowling Green on Monday-Tuesday (Sept. 10-11).

Fresh off a strong showing at the Bradley Fall Invitational, the women's tennis team will travel to Bowling Green to take part in the three-day Bowling Green Invite. Action begins on Friday (Sept. 14) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 16).

The men's tennis team opens its fall schedule this weekend when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to compete in the Ball State Invite. The three-day tourney runs from Friday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 16.

The cross country team will be in Bowling Green as well, running in the annual Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15 beginning at 10:45 a.m.

Volleyball Opens Horizon League Play. . .
Vikings Face Wright State and Butler On The Road

After claiming its third runner-up finish in as many tournaments this season, the Vikings are set to open up Horizon League play this weekend. CSU will travel to Wright State for a 7:00 pm match on Friday (Sept. 14) before making its way to Butler for a 4:00 pm match on Saturday (Sept. 15).

The Vikings are 17-30 all-time against Wright State and will attempt to break a three-match losing streak to the Raiders. On the other hand, CSU has won three straight against Butler, but trail the all-time series, 7-20.

"We played a pretty difficult early season schedule and that should prepare us for the league portion of our schedule," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We are going to work hard this week on taking care of our side of the court."

Voss will attempt to reach two milestones this weekend on the road. He is currently two victories shy of 150 for his career and also needs two wins to move into second place on the all-time wins list at CSU (117).

The Vikings opened the SIU Invitational with a 3-2 loss to the host Salukis on Friday (Sept. 7). After winning the first two games, the Vikings dropped the final three and fell to 0-3 in five set matches this year. Sophomore Beth Greulich led the Vikings with a career-high 19 kills.

CSU rebounded to win a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 8). The Vikings swept Murray State in the afternoon before earning a 3-2 win over Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday evening. Junior Jenni Ramminger, who was named to the all-tournament team along with Greulich, totaled 36 kills in the two matches, including a career-best 22 against UMKC.

Senior Mel Snyder finished totaled 160 assists in the three matches and became just the fourth player in school-history to record 3,000 career assists. She is fourth on the all-time list at CSU with 3,091.

Men's Soccer Plays Two At UNLV adidas Invitational. . .
Vikings Are 2-1-1 After Beating Western Michigan & Tying Kentucky Last Week

The Vikings men's soccer team will continue its current five-match road trip when it plays a pair of matches this week at the UNLV adidas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Vikings will open the tourney on Friday (Sept. 14) with a 6:30 p.m. match against Cal State Northridge. After a day off, play concludes on Sunday (Sept. 16) when CSU squares off with Cal Poly beginning at 1:00 p.m.

"This will be the toughest week of the non-conference schedule," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "Both of the teams that we will play are used to a fast pace and we will have to play our best in order to get a victory this week"

After opening the season with a dissapointing loss to St. Bonaventure, the Vikings have rebounded to go 2-0-1 in their last three matches. CSU used a Bryan Henson goal to claim a 1-0 win at Western Michigan last Wednesday (Sept. 5) and played to double overtime before tying Kentucky, 1-1, on Sunday (Sept. 9).

Women's Soccer Plays At Akron, Hosts Canisius. . .
Vikings Won Two of Three On The Road Last Week

The women's soccer team will close out their four-match in four-state road swing this week when the Vikings play at Akron on Friday (Sept. 14) at 7:30 p.m. CSU then returns home to host Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 16) beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.

After not winning a match away from home in any of the last three years, the Vikings won two road matches last week. CSU rallied from a 4-2 second half deficit to claim a 5-4 overtime win over IPFW on Tuesday (Sept. 4). Over the weekend, the Vikings dropped an 8-1 decision at Temple on Friday (Sept. 7) before routing Delaware State, 3-0, on Sunday (Sept. 9). Prior to this week, CSU was 0-31-1 on the road.

"This was a pretty good week for us," head coach Derrek Falor said. "I thought heading into the season that our offense would be much improved this year and by scoring nine goals this week, it shows how far we have come since last season. Still, we have some concerns with injuries on our defense and will have to figure out a way to solidify that unit."

The trio of senior Shayna Back, junior Jennifer Wieand and freshman Sylvia Olsby have been responsible for the Viking improvement on offense this year, combining to score eight of the squad's 10 goals and hand out a six of the teams' seven assists.

Cross Country Runs At Mel Brodt Invitational. . .

The Vikings will return to action this weekend when they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15. The meet is slated to begin at 10:45 am.

CSU placed eighth at the Crusader Invitational on Friday evening in Valparaiso, Ind. Freshman Allison Craine was once again the top Viking finisher as she clocked a 20:45 to finish 19th overall. She was the top freshman finisher among the five Horizon League schools who participated in the event.

Sophomore Colleen Conway was CSU's second finisher for the second straight week as she tallied a 31st place showing with a time of 21:38. Sophomore Julie Piotrowski placed 42nd (22:26) and was the Vikings third finisher.

"It was good for us to run at Valparaiso last week because it gave us a chance to see the course that the conference championships will be held," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "The team knows that there is room to improve and they continue to work hard.

Women's Tennis Heads To Bowling Green Invite. . .

The women's tennis team will continue its fall schedule when the Vikings play in the three-day Bowling Green Invitational. The flighted tourney begins on Friday (Sept. 14) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 16).

"This will be another good test for us," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We should get some pretty good exposure to the other teams in our region which will present a good challenge for our young team."

Cleveland State opened the 2007-08 campaign last weekend by playing in the Bradley Fall Invitational last weekend. Freshman Melissa Holzinger and Sanda Bjelan led the way, finishing fourth in the "A" flight and third in the "B" flight, respectively. The senior duo of Jen Myers and Christine Vogelgesang also played well, going 2-2 each in singles play and teaming to finish second in the "C" Double Flight with a 2-1 record.

Men's Tennis Starts Season With Ball State Invitational. . .

Men's tennis will be the last of the eight fall sports to begin their season, doing so when they play in the Ball State Invitational this weekend. The three-day flighted tourney begins on Friday (Sept. 14) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 16).

"I am looking forward to the tourney at Ball State because it will be the first chance to see our men's team in action," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We've had an extra week of practice to get prepared for our season so I expect us to come out with a lot of energy. This will give us a good test against some of the better regional opponents."

The Vikings return five of the six regulars from last year's team that tied the school record for dual match victories in a season, going 18-8 overall and finishing a school-best third at the Horizon League Championships. The lineup is led by the duo of senior Brad Groleski (18-20) and sophomore Phil Orno (21-16), who split the top two singles slots last year. The junior trio of Ryan Hamning (19-6 at No. 3), Rob West (24-9 at No. 5) and Steven Wipprecht (13-20 at No. 6) are also back with freshmen Chris Klepatz and Robert Fox also expected to claim a spot in the lineup this week.

Men's Golf Opens Season At Bowling Green. . .

The CSU men's golf team, led by first-year head coach and former Viking golfer Steve Weir, will open the 2007-08 season with a trip west to Bowling Green, Ohio for the John Piper Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 10-11).

The tournament will take place at Stoneridge Golf Club, a par-72, 7,064 yard course.

"We've got a pretty veteran group and the guys are hitting the ball well and putting well," Weir said. "We want to get off to a good start and have the expectation that we can go in and compete to win the tournament."

Junior Jake Scott is the top returning golfer for CSU after averaging 75.0 strokes per round last season. He is coming off an outstanding summer of golf in which he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship and tied for second place at the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championships with CSU freshman Kent Monas.

Also returning for the Vikings are senior Doug Barber (78.9) and sophomores Patrick Elber (76.9), Kyle Cobb (77.1) and Derrick Williams (80.0).

Joining Monas as newcomers this season are fellow freshmen Kellen Erdman, Zakary Frognowski and Shane Swanson

Women's Golf Continues Season At Western Illinois. . .

Cleveland State returns to action at the Western Illinois Autumn Invitiational on Sunday (Sept. 16) and Monday (Sept. 17) at the par-72, Harry Mussatto Golf Club in Macomb, Ill. The Vikings will be joined by fellow Horizon League members Butler and Loyola at the event.

"The expectations for this year's team are high and I am excited to see them go out and perform," head coach Steve Weir said. "After ending last season on such a high note, the players are more comfortable heading into this season."

The Vikings are competing in their first tournament of the season at the Youngstown State Invitational (Sept. 9-10). The event is being contested on the par-72, Salem Hills Golf Course in Salem, Ohio.
