Vikings Keep Fall Slate On The Road. . . For the third week in a row, the competition schedule for the Vikings is heavily laden with road contests as all seven teams that will be in action this week will play on the road with both men's and women's soccer also playing a home contest. The men's soccer team (2-3-1) will return home for only the second time this year when the Vikings host Notre Dame College on Wednesday (Sept. 19) at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. CSU then continues non-conference play at Duquesne on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23). The women's soccer team opens the week at Indiana State on Friday (Sept. 21) before returning home to host Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 23) at Krenzler Field. Women's volleyball continues its Horizon League slate when the Vikings play at Youngstown State on Friday (Sept. 21). It will end a stretch that has seen CSU open the season by playing 13 of 14 matches on the road. The men's tennis team will compete in its second fall tourney, taking part in the Toledo Invitational. The three-day tourney begins on Friday (Sept. 21) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 23). Both golf teams are in action early in the week. The women will play the final round of the Western Illinois Autumn Invitational on Monday (Sept. 17) while the men will play 36 holes at the Kansas Invitational on Monday and the final round on Tuesday (Sept. 18). The cross country team continues its schedule by running in the Ohio University Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 22). The 5,000-meter race begins at 10:30 a.m. Volleyball Plays At Youngstown State. . . The Viking volleyball team will be back in action just one time this week when they travel to Youngstown State for a 7:00 pm match on Friday (Sept. 21). It will be CSU's final stop on its season opening road trip which sees them play 13 of their first 14 games away from Woodling Gym. "We've played a lot of tight, close matches this year and we have been finding a way to win a lot of those," head coach Chuck Voss said. "I think the experiences we have gained during the early part of our schedule is going to pay dividends down the stretch." For the second consecutive weekend, Voss will attempt to reach two milestones on the road. He is currently one victory shy of 150 for his career and also needs one wins to move into second place on the all-time wins list at CSU (117). CSU opened Horizon League play with two matches on the road last weekend. On Friday (Sept. 14), CSU dropped a 3-2 decision at Wright State despite double-doubles from freshman Amy Benz, sophomore Alexis Korovich and senior Mel Snyder. Game five featured three lead changes and six ties, the final one which came at 14-14, but back-to-back attack errors by CSU ended the match. The Vikings rebounded with a solid effort on Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon to earn a 3-1 win at Butler. After splitting the first two games, Butler took a 24-20 lead in game two. However, the Vikings scored 10 of the final 13 points to take a 2-1 lead and then limited the Bulldogs to a -.053 hitting percentage to take game four and the match. Korovich finished with her sixth double-double of the season (14 kills, 15 digs), while sophomore Beth Greulich chipped in 12 kills and freshman Meghan Mental added a career-high 10 digs. Men's Soccer Returns Home. . . After playing five consecutive matches on the road in four different states, the men's soccer team returns home to host a mid-week match against Notre Dame College on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. CSU then travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a Sunday (Sept. 23) matchup at Duquesne. The Vikings are coming off a strong, yet victory-less, showing last week at the UNLV adidas Invitational, dropping a 2-0 decision to Cal State Northridge on Friday (Sept. 14) and a 1-0 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday (Sept. 16). "We played pretty well out in Las Vegas but came home with nothing to show for it," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "The heat and weather conditions had an impact on our play and we were able to get in two good matches against strong teams from California. Last week really helped us to get ready for conference play." The Vikings have struggled to put the ball in the net this year, scoring just five goals in their six matches with one of the five being an own goal. At the same time, CSU has allowed nine goals, including just six in the last five contests. Freshman goalie Nick Harpel continues to lead the league in goals against average (0.64), save percentage (.893) and shutouts (2). Women's Soccer Plays At Indiana State, Hosts Cincinnati. . . The women's soccer team continues non-conference play with a pair of matches. The Vikings open the week on Friday (Sept. 21) with a 5:00 p.m. match at Indiana State before returning home on Sunday (Sept. 23) to host Cincinnati beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. "This will be an important week for us because we will once be facing two teams that we should be able to compete with," head coach Derrek Falor said. "Injuries have been a problem over the last couple of weeks so if we can get our regulars on the field, then I am optimistic about our prospects." Cleveland State suffered a pair of one-goal losses last week to fall to 2-5 on the year. The Vikings lost at Akron, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 14) and then came home to drop a 2-1 decision to Canisius. CSU is now 1-3 this year in matches decided by one goal. The trio of Shayna Back, Jennifer Wieand and Sylvia Olsby continue to lead the Viking offensive attack. Back is third in the league in scoring (10 points) and fourth in points per game (1.43) while Wieand leads the conference in shots (24), is second in shots per game (3.43), is fifth in points (8) and sixth in points per game (1.14). Olsby leads all league freshman in assists (3) and is second in both goals (2) and points (7). Women's Tennis Takes Extra Week To Prepare For Spartan Invite. . . The women's tennis team will take the week off from competition, using the time to prepare for its next fall tourney, the Spartan Invitational, which will be held from Sept. 28-30 at Michigan State. The Vikings have taken part in flighted tournament play in each of the last two weekends. At Bowling Green last week, Jenn Myers and Charlotte Gibbons finished second in their respective singles flights and Denisa Muntean recorded a third place singles finish and teamed with Morgan Ungerott to finish second in her doubles flight. Myers won a pair of matches on Saturday to advance to Sunday's title contest in the No. 3 singles flight but was shutout by Toledo's Ashley Frey, 6-0, 6-0. Gibbons had a similar showing on Saturday before being bested by Bowling Green's Stefanie Menoff, 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday. Muntean rebounded from a second round loss on Saturday to upend Akron's Laura Hemlapp, 6-2, 6-0 to claim third place. Muntean later teamed with Ungerott to defeat Horning & Frey from Toledo, 9-8 (2) to advance to the No. 3 Doubles title match but fell to Seyalioglu/Zinn from Xavier, 9-7, to finish second. "We've played some pretty good regional opponents over the last two weekends and I am happy with our performance so far," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We've seen some good performances in singles from the top part of our lineup and our doubles play has improved dramatically since practice started. Those are some pretty good signs." Men's Tennis Continues Fall Slate At Toledo Invitational. . . The men's tennis team will be in action for the second time this fall when the Vikings travel to Toledo to take part in the Toledo Invitational. The three-day flighted tournament begins on Friday (Sept. 21) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 23). The Vikings opened their fall tournament schedule last weekend at the Ball State Invitational. Rob West advanced to the "B" singles semi-finals and Ryan Hamning and Phil Orno were each eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the "A" singles draw. On the doubles side, all three CSU teams were eliminated on Saturday, including a "B" flight semi-final match by the team of West and Chris Klepatz. Three Vikings were active in their respective singles draws on Saturday. West routed Filippe Gama from Eastern Illinois, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals, but Marquette's Mark Rutherford eliminated him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Hamning and Orno both started the day active in the "A" single draw but Orno was eliminated by Northern Illinois' Brian Livingston, 6-2, 6-3 while Hamning was dropping a 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 decision to Ball State's Eduardo Tavia. "We were hoping to do a little better and actually play for something on Sunday, but it was not to be," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This weekend has really opened our eyes to what we need to work on before we head to the tournament at Toledo next weekend. We have to play better in doubles and I was a little disappointed with our mental fortitude this weekend. We can surely improve on that." Cross Country Travels To Ohio University Invitational. . . The Vikings are back in action this Saturday (Sept. 22) at the Ohio University Invitational in Athens, Ohio. The event, which is slated to begin at 10:30 am, will be the fourth straight weekend that CSU will compete. CSU placed 14th at the Mel Brodt Invitational hosted by Bowling Green on Saturday. Freshman Alison Craine continued to shine as she was CSU's top finisher for the third consecutive week as she ran a personal best time of 19:02. It was the top time run by a Viking in the 21st century. In addition, sophomores Julie Piotrowski (19:43) and Colleen Conway (20:04) also ran personal bests, while all eight runners who competed posted season best times. "We had a really good week of practice and the girls responded with a great effort at Bowling Green," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "The women are really pleased that everyone is working so hard and they are all feeding off of each other." Men's Golf Heads To Kansas Invitational. . . The Vikings are back in action this week at the 54-hole Kansas Invitational on Monday (Sept. 17) and Tuesday (Sept. 18) at the par-72, 7,092-yard Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The 16-team field will play a practice round on Sunday before playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. "I am pleased with the way we opened the season," head coach Steve Weir said. "We hit the ball really well at Bowling Green and are hoping to carry that over with us to Kansas. We finished 16th at Kansas last season and we are going into the event this season with an attitude that we can improve on that." CSU opened its fall season with a fourth place showing at the John Piper Intercollegiate hosted by Bowling Green last Monday (Sept. 10) and Tuesday (Sept. 11). Playing at the par-72, Sand Ridge Golf Club, the Vikings shot a three round total of 883 (288-293-302) to finish four shots behind third place Green Bay. The 36-hole event will feature teams playing 18 holes each day. "You really couldn't ask for a better way to open the season," head coach Steve Weir said. "The women are playing with a lot of confidence and I am looking for them to improve more and more each week." The Vikings are coming off a tie for fourth place at the Youngstown State Invitational last weekend (Sept. 9-10) at the par-72, Salem Hills Golf Club. CSU shot a 329 in Sunday's opening round before firing a school-record 320 in Monday's final round.
