Soccer & Volleyball Come Home. . . The busy fall schedule slows just a little bit this week as only four of the eight Viking fall sports will be in action with four of the eight scheduled events being played at home. The volleyball team will be the busiest, playing a Tuesday (Oct. 2) match at Valparaiso before returning home to host UIC at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 5) and Loyola at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 6). The men's soccer team, which has played at home just twice in nine matches this year, opens league play this week with a pair of contests at Krenzler Field. The Vikings host preseason favorite UIC on Friday (Oct. 5) at 7:00 p.m. and Loyola on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 1:00 p.m. Fresh off a split of a pair of home contests last week, the women's soccer team continues league play with road matches at Loyola on Friday (Oct. 5) and Wright State on Sunday (Oct. 7). The only other team in action this week is cross country, which will run at the annual All-Ohio Championships on Friday, Oct. 5 beginning at 2:00 p.m. Men's and women's tennis and golf are all idle this week. Volleyball Plays Three League Matches This Week. . . Cleveland State will be in action three times this week, including a pair of home matches this weekend. The week begins with a 7:00 pm match at Horizon League newcomer Valparaiso on Tuesday night before CSU returns home to host UIC on Friday at 7:00 pm and Loyola on Saturday at 4:00 pm. Both matches will be played in Woodling Gym. CSU ran its win streak to four matches with a pair of wins at home over the weekend beginning with a 3-0 sweep of Green Bay on Friday night as Alexis Korovich notched her fourth consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Over the last five matches, Korovich is averaging 12.0 kills and 15.0 digs per match. On Saturday (Sept. 29), the Vikings fell in a 2-1 hole against Milwaukee, but rallied for a 3-2 win that snapped the Panthers 14-match win streak. It was also the first time CSU defeated Milwaukee since the 2004 league semifinals. Junior Jenni Ramminger led the Viking offense with a career-best 23 kills, while classmate Jordan Bateman totaled 36 digs, one shy of tying the school-record. "It was good to play some home matches for a change," head coach Chuck Voss said. "I thought we were a little too excited to start, but we really settled down and played well. We have a tough week coming up with three matches, but I think we are really starting to gel as a team." There have been several bright spots for CSU this season, including freshman Amy Benz who is leading the league in hitting percentage (.364) and blocks (1.46 bpg). Senior Mel Snyder tops the conference in assists (11.47 apg) and is just six helpers shy of moving into third place on the all-time assist list at CSU (3,321). Men's Soccer Returns Home. . . After opening the season by playing seven of its first nine matches on the road, the men's soccer team (3-5-1) returns home this week to host UIC and Loyola for Horizon League matches at Krenzler Field. The Vikings face UIC on Friday (Oct. 5) at 7:00 p.m. and then come back to meet Loyola on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 1:00 p.m. "This is an important week for us because we will be facing two of the better teams in the league at home," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "Our non-conference schedule has helped to prepare us for league play and even though we will be using a relatively young lineup, I think we matchup well against pretty much anybody in the league. "Last year, we lost by a goal twice to Loyola and 2-0 at UIC. We are a much better team this year so it will be good to see what we can do when we face them at home," Kazemaini added. The Vikings are coming off a 1-0 win at Canisius on Sunday, a match that saw sophomore George Kephart net the game-winner with just over 13 minutes left. Freshman Nick Harpel recorded his third shutout of the year, the most by a Viking since Andy Carl had five shutouts in 1996. Women's Soccer Travels To Loyola & Wright State. . . The women's soccer team (3-7, 0-1) continues Horizon League play this week when it plays road matches at Loyola (Friday, Oct. 5) and Wright State (Sunday, Oct. 7). The Vikings split their two matches last week, routing Robert Morris, 3-1, on Friday (Sept. 28) and falling 1-0 in overtime to Green Bay on Sunday (Sept. 30). "We played one of our better matches this season against Robert Morris, but I thought that we left a win on the field against Green Bay," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "Our offense has done a nice job of applying pressure and creating scoring opportunities this season but unfortunately, we couldn't find the net against Green Bay. "This will be two very tough matches for us this week as we will be facing two of the better teams in the league on the road. It will be a good challenge for us," The Viking offense, which ranks second in the Horizon League in both goals (16) and points (45), has already equalled the school record for goals in a season, which was set last year. Junior Jennifer Wieand (6-2-14) and senior Shayna Back (5-3-13) lead the way with Wieand tying Back's school records for goals and points, which was set a year ago. Cross Country To Compete At All-Ohio Championships. . . Cleveland State will be back in action this week when it competes at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday afternoon in Delaware, Ohio. The race, which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm, will take place at the Methodist Theological School. Ohio Wesleyan will serve as the host school. The Vikings are coming off a sixth place finish out of 12 schools at the Earlham Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29. Freshman Allison Craine was CSU's top finisher for the fifth consecutive week as she placed fourth with a time of 19:52. Craine was running in sixth place with about 300-meters left, but was able to rally and pass two runners and earn fourth place. She was less than one second out of third place. "Allison ran a great race and looked really good, especially her kick down the stretch," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "I was happy with the way we ran on a tough, challenging course with a lot of rolling hills. We will have a good test this weekend to see how far along we have come this season." Sophomore Julie Piotrowski was CSU's second finisher at Earlham as she clocked in at 20:58 to place 22nd. By virtue of their top-25 finishes, both Craine and Piotrowski were honored at a post-race ceremony and presented with awards. Viking High Fives Jenni Ramminger: The junior recorded a career-high 23 kills in Saturday's 3-2 win over Milwaukee to earn Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week. Jordan Bateman: The scrappy defensive player came up with a career-best 36 digs, which was one shy of tying the school-record, against Milwaukee to earn Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honors. Jennifer Wieand: Only halfway through the women's soccer season, the junior forward has already tied the school records for goals (6) and points (14) in a season, including two goals in CSU's 3-1 win over Robert Morris. Nick Harpel: Playing just his eighth match in goal for CSU, he recorded his third shutout of the season vs. Canisius on Sunday, helping CSU snap a four-match losing streak. Softball: The Vikings beat Ohio State, Kent State, Robert Morris and Ashland over the weekend to win the Kent State Invitational title. The Schedule Ahead For The Vikings Oct. 2 (Tuesday)
