Soccer & Volleyball Come Home. . . The fall sports season begins its transition into the winter as all but one fall sport will be in action this week while four of the winter sports will host events. Headlining the home events is the second annual Mid-Vike Madness, which is being held on Friday, Oct. 12 beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center. The event celebrates the start of the basketball practice season and will feature all sorts of contests, events and prizes along with exhibitions by the CSU men's and women's basketball teams. Admission is free but fans must have picked up a ticket beforehand to gain admittance. The volleyball team starts the second half of its Horizon League schedule in a first place tie with Milwaukee with a 7-1 record. The Vikings conclude their four-match home stand by hosting Butler on Friday (Oct. 12) at 7:00 p.m. and Wright State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Woodling Gym. The only other teams in action at home this week are the men's and women's swimming teams, which will host Valparaiso beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 13). The meet will mark the debut of Viking women's swimming coach Wally Morton, who has served as the head men's coach for the past 26 years before taking on women's coaching duties during the off-season. Both soccer teams will be continue their respective Horizon League schedules on the road. The women play just one match, a Friday night (Oct. 12) contest at Youngstown State while the men play at Green Bay on Friday and at Milwaukee on Sunday (Oct. 14). The cross country team will run its seventh race of the season when the Vikings head to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Falon Invitational. The 5,000 meter race will be run starting at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 13). The men's tennis team will play in its final fall tournament of the year when the Vikings travel to Louisville, Ky. to take part in the Louisville Invitational. The three-day tourney will be held from Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 14. First Place Vikings To Host Butler & Wright State. . . Cleveland State (14-5, 7-1 HL) will be in action two times this weekend when the Vikings begin the second round of their Horizon League schedule by hosting Butler on Friday (Oct. 12) night at 7:00 pm and Wright State on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 4:00 pm. Both matches will be played in Woodling Gym. At the midpoint of league play, CSU is tied for first place with Milwaukee at 7-1, but has handed the Panthers their only conference loss. The Vikings have won seven consecutive league matches since falling to Wright State, 3-2, on Sept. 14. The Vikings ran their win streak to seven with three wins last week starting with a 3-1 win at league newcomer Valparaiso on Tuesday (Oct. 2). CSU followed that up by defeating UIC, 3-2, on Friday (Oct. 5) and Loyola, 3-0, on Saturday (Oct. 6) in Woodling Gym. "We played three really good matches last week and are gaining a lot of confidence with each match we play," head coach Chuck Voss said. "To get a win at Valparaiso and then come from behind and defeat UIC in five was awesome. We have been playing good volleyball over the last couple of weeks and we need to continue to play that way as we go through the conference for the second time." Sophomore Kayla Lefeld had the best week of her young career as she totaled 42 kills, including a career-high 22 against UIC, and hit .381 in the three wins. Lefeld also came off the bench to produce 11 kills at Valparaiso, seven of which came in the deciding fourth game. Freshman Amy Benz recorded her second career double-double with 11 kills and 11 blocks against Valparaiso, while sophomore Alexis Korovich also notched a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs against the Crusaders. In the five-set win over UIC, sophomore Beth Greulich posted a career-high of 20 kills, while Korovich added her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs against Loyola Men's Soccer Continues League Play In Wisconsin. . . After opening Horizon League play at home last week by tying preseason favorite UIC, the Vikings hit the road for matches against Green Bay and Milwaukee. CSU will face Green Bay on Friday (Oct 12) at 8:00 p.m., before traveling to Milwaukee on Sunday (Oct. 14) for a 1:30 p.m. contest. The Vikings opened Horizon League play at home last weekend, tying UIC 1-1 on Friday (Oct. 5) before dropping a 2-0 decision to Loyola on Sunday. "To get a tie against UIC is quite an accomplishment but we followed that up by making a couple of mistakes that cost us the match against Loyola," CSU head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "All of the goals we gave up were preventable. I'm pleased with our overall progress and I think teams now know that when they play us, they have to come out with their `A' game" because we are a different program than we were two years ago." Sophomore midfielder Mitch Boyer has taken over as the leading scorer on the team, scoring the lone goal on a penalty shot vs. UIC to raise his scoring total to six points. His four assists are the fourth-highest total in the Horizon League this year. Women's Soccer To Square Off With Youngstown State. . . The women's soccer team (3-10, 0-3) has its lightest week of the season, playing just one match this week, a 7:00 p.m. Friday (Oct. 12) showdown at Youngstown State. Although its just one match, the stakes are high as it features the last two teams that are winless in league play with the winning team virtually guaranteeing that it won't finish in last place in the Horizon League. "This is an important match for us," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "Not only will we be playing a team that hasn't won yet in league play, but we will also be starting a stretch that will have us play the teams that are sixth, seventh and eighth in the league this year. If we play well at Youngstown State, then the momentum that we can gain could carryover to the remainder of the schedule." After being shutout just three times in their first 11 matches this season, the Vikings have now been shutout in three straight after dropping a 3-0 decision at Loyola last Friday (Oct. 5) and losing 4-0 at Wright State on Sunday (Oct. 7). Swimming Hosts Valparaiso To Kick Off 2007-08 Season. . . The men's and women's swimming and diving teams open their season at home against Valparaiso with a 2:00 p.m. meet at Busbey Natatorium. Wally Morton, who served as the men's head coach the last 26 years, was promoted to Director of Competitive Aquatics in the off-season and will serve as the head coach for both the men's and women's programs this season. "I am really looking forward to this season for a number of reasons," Morton said. "We have a very strong and dedicated group of student-athletes on the men's team and we will host the league championships next February. It will also be a challenge working with the women's team for the first time and starting to develop them into champions." The Viking men hope to improve on their second place finish at the Horizon League Championships. Sophomore Jakob Dobies, who was league newcomer of the year, set league and school records in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.92, and also set a league record of 53.77 in the 100 yd breast stroke. The women finished sixth in the Horizon League Championships last year. Junior twin sisters Kristine and Sandra Bunker return hoping to continue their solid performances from a year ago. Kristine placed 11th in the 200 fly, while Sandra placed 13th in the 200 back. Senior Deanna Raedel finished 12th in the 200 breast. Men's Golf Turns In Strong Effort At IPFW, Belmont Next. . . Cleveland State puts a cap on its fall schedule by heading to Brentwood, Tenn. for the Belmont Fall Shootout on Oct. 15-16. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-71, 6,501 yard Old Natchez Country Club. The Vikings will open play on Monday (Oct. 15) with 36 holes before concluding the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday. CSU is coming off a fourth place showing at the IPFW Fall Classic on Oct. 8-9 at the par-71, 6,582-yard Deer Track Golf Course. The Vikings opened play on Monday by shooting school-record rounds of 277-277 in the morning and afternoon and were in a third place tie. However, CSU struggled to a final round 291 to finish fourth. Jacob Scott and Kyle Cobb fired 54-hole totals of two-under-par to tie for sixth place. Scott opened with a career-low 67 in Monday's first round before finishing with a 69 and 72. Cobb shot 70-68-70. "This will be a really important week for us," head coach Steve Weir said. "We've played really well in the opening two rounds of tournaments to put ourselves in contention, but haven't been able to put together a complete final round. We need to find a way to be more consistent and learn how to close a tournament." Women's Golf To Finish Fall Slate At IPFW. . . The Vikings will conclude their fall season by competing in the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Oct. 15-16. The 36-hole tournament is scheduled to take place at the par-71, 6,102-yard Deer Track Golf Club. CSU placed fifth at the 36-hole Detroit Invitational on Oct. 8-9. Playing the par-71, 5,995-yard Western Golf & Country Club, the Vikings shot rounds of 346 and 361. Sophomore Laren Beese was CSU's top finisher as she tied for 23rd at 175 (85-90). "We never got anything going at Detroit," head coach Steve Weir said. "The course really didn't suit our style of play, but that's not an excuse. We need to prepare for our final fall tournament at IPFW next week and I think that course suits our style of play much more." Cross Country To Run At Falcon Invitational. . . Cleveland State will be back in action this week when it competes at the Falcon Invitational at Bowling Green on Saturday (Oct. 13). The race is slated to begin at 10:45 am and will be the final event for CSU before the Horizon League Championships on Oct. 27. On Friday (Oct. 5), the Vikings competed at the All-Ohio Championships at the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio and placed 31st of 44 teams. Freshman Allison Craine was CSU's top finisher for the sixth time in as many races this season as she finished 129th in 21:39. Sophomore Colleen Conway was 167th with a time of 22:22, while sophomore Alison Ohliger placed 174th in 22:42. "It was a tough day to run with the heat that we battled," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "But the team really grinded it out and finished strong. We are looking forward to running on a much faster course at Bowling Green this weekend that we had a lot of success on earlier this season." On Sept. 15, the Vikings competed at Bowling Green in the Mel Brodt Invitational and three CSU runners recorded personal best times. Viking High Fives Sarah Galon: The women's tennis soon-to-be-graduate bested nominees from 330 schools to earn the NCAA Sportsmanship Award for NCAA Division I women. Men's Golf: Not only did the Vikings set a school record for lowest team round by shooting a 277 at the IPFW Fall Classic on Monday (Oct. 9), but they did it twice, posting back-to-back seven-under-par team totals during their 36 holes on Columbus Day. Kayla Lefeld: The volleyball sophomore amassed a career-high 22 kills in Friday's win over UIC, helping the Vikings take over first place in the Horizon League. Jacob Scott: The men's golf junior shot a 67 in the opening round on his way to a sixth place finish at the IPFW Fall Classic. The 67 was the third lowest single round total in CSU history.
