Two Home Soccer Matches Highlight Busy Week. . . The fall sports season continues its frantic pace as eight Viking teams will see action this week with only the men's and women's soccer teams playing at home. The biggest event of the week will come on Friday (Oct. 19) in Milwaukee, Wis. where the inside track on the Horizon League regular season title will be on the line when the volleyball team puts its nine-match winning streak on the line against Milwaukee. Both CSU and UWM are tied for first place with 9-1 records with six matches to go in the regular season. The Vikings will then travel to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix on Saturday (Oct. 20). The week begins with both golf teams closing their respective fall schedules on the road. The men will be in Nashville, Tenn. to play in the Belmont Fall Shootout on Mon.-Tues. (Oct. 15-16). At the same time, the women's golf team will be playing in the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. Both soccer teams will play a pair of matches. The men open the week at home against Butler on Friday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field and then travel to Wright State on Sunday (Oct. 21) for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The women's soccer team starts on the road, squaring off with Milwaukee on Friday (Oct. 19) at 4:00 p.m. before returning home to host Valparaiso on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. The women's swimming team continues its early season schedule when the Vikings swim at St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Individuals from both tennis teams will take part in their respective ITA Regional Tournaments this week, which begins on Wednesday (Oct. 17) and runs through Sunday (Oct. 21). The men will be in action in Minneapolis, Minn. (University of Minnesota) while the women will play in Ann Arbor, Mich. (University of Michigan). Volleyball Runs Win Streak To Nine. . After spending the last three weekends at home, Cleveland State (16-5, 9-1 HL) will hit the road for a big weekend with two matches in Wisconsin. On Friday (Oct. 19), CSU will travel to Milwaukee for a first place showdown at 8:00 pm EST with the Panthers, who are also 9-1 in league play. It was the Vikings who handed Milwaukee their only conference loss of the season (3-2) on Sept. 29. On Saturday (Oct. 20), CSU will head to Green Bay for a 5:00 pm EST match. "This is a big week for us in terms of where we could finish in the conference," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have been playing our best volleyball of the season during the last several weeks and we need to continue to play with confidence." CSU ran its win streak to nine straight and clinched its sixth consecutive winning season with a pair of wins last weekend in Woodling Gym as the Vikings earned a 3-0 sweep of Butler on Friday (Oct. 12) before avenging its lone conference loss of the season by defeating Wright State, 3-1, on Saturday (Oct. 13). The nine-match win streak is the third longest in school-history and two shy of tying the all-time record of 11 straight wins. In addition, the six straight winning seasons trail the record of seven set from 1972-78. Sophomore Alexis Korovich had a monster week for CSU as she averaged 5.29 kills, 4.43 digs and 6.00 points per game in the two wins. In addition, she notched her team-leading 12th and 13th double-doubles as she finished with 18 kills and 11 digs against Butler and a season-best 19 kills and 20 digs against Wright State. Mel Snyder also had a big match against Butler as she finished with 40 assists, nine digs and six kills, as the Vikings also tallied seven service aces to the Bulldogs zero. Beth Greulich (12), Kayla Lefeld (11) and Amy Benz (11) reached double-digit kills in the win over Wright State, while Snyder chipped in 40 assists and seven digs. The Vikings amassed a season-best 13 aces against the Raiders, including a team-best three by Maggie Bonomini. Men's Soccer Hosts Butler, Travels To Wright State. . . After a pair of one-goal losses in Wisconsin last week, the men's soccer team returns home for only the fifth time this season when the Vikings (3-8-2, 0-2-1) play Butler on Friday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. CSU then closes the week by travelling to Wright State for an afternoon matchup on Sunday (Oct. 21). "Last week was very frustrating," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "We played two of the better teams in our conference very well on the road last weekend but came away with a pair of losses. Both matches could have easily gone the other way had we caught a break or two. Still, we are a very young team that will continue to get better and better." Frustrating was the perfect word to describe the Vikings week as Green Bay scored a late second half goal on Friday (Oct. 12) to claim a 1-0 victory. Two days later, defending Horizon League champion Milwaukee scored two goals in a two-minute span early in the first half and then held on for a 2-1 win on a cold and wet day in Milwaukee. George Kephart scored CSU's lone goal. Women's Soccer Plays Milwaukee & Valparaiso. . . With two weeks left in the regular season, the Viking women's soccer team will take to the road for the final time before the league tournament, playing at Milwaukee on Friday (Oct. 19) at 4:00 p.m. The Vikings will then return home to start a three-match homestand against Valparaiso on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. CSU (4-10, 1-3) is coming off a 2-0 win at Youngstown State last week, a victory that snapped a 27-match winless streak in Horizon League play that dates back to the formation of the program in 2004. "The win at Youngstown State was a milestone victory for this program," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We have come so close to winning a league match before but we always seemed to let something stop us. Now that we have that first win, it should be easier to take the next step in the growth of the program." Jennifer Wieand keyed the win at Youngstown State by scoring her school-record seventh goal of the season. The goal also allowed her to set the school mark for points in a season (16), breaking the old records of six goals and 14 points set last year by teammate Shayna Back. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich tied the school record with her second shutout this season. Women's Swimming Continues Season At St. Francis (Pa.) . . . The early season swimming schedule continues this week when the women's swimming team travels to St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday (Oct. 20) for a 1:00 p.m. meet. The men's team is idle until hosting Green Bay on Oct. 27. Both teams opened their respective seasons against Valparaiso on Oct. 13 with the men claiming a 174-52 win, while the women fell, 155-81. "I'm very pleased with how everything went on Saturday," CSU director of competitive aquatics Wally Morton said. "We had some athletes perform their personal bests. I am also pleased with our team unity. We have a long way to go, but we are heading in the right direction." Dave Duecker led the men's effort by winning three events, the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.14), 500 yard freestyle (4:51.42), and the 1000 yard freestyle (9:55.46). 2007 NCAA qualifier Jacub Dobies won both the 200 yard IM (1:58.95) and the 100 yard freestyle (46.39) while Dan Baiko won the one and three meter diving events. For the women, Sandra Bunker took first place in the 200 yard backstroke (2:16.88), Frances Clarion took second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:57.27) and third in the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.89), and Erin Green finished second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:23.87) and third in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:02.45). "I think the women will be fine," Morton says. "I'm looking for them to improve on a weekly basis. I'm proud of how they performed." Tennis Sends Individuals To ITA Regionals. . . With the team portion of their respective fall schedules complete, the men's and women's tennis teams will each send several individuals to compete this week at the annual ITA Regional Tournaments. The men's tournament will be played in Minneapolis, MN while the women will play in Ann Arbor, MI. Qualifying brackets will be played on Thurs.-Fri., Oct. 18-19 with main draw play starting on Saturday, Oct. 20. The men's team will have three individuals competing. Sophomore Phil Orno is the first men's player in school history to earn a bid to play in the main draw while teammates Robert Fox and Ryan Hamning will each play in the qualifying draw, needing three wins to advance to the main draw. In addition, Hamning and Orno will team to play in the main doubles draw, with play beginning on Friday. Freshmen Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb each received a berth in the women's qualifying draw with Tabb teaming with senior Jenn Myers to play in the main doubles draw. "This should be an interesting week for us because all six players who will be competing are capable of succeeding at this tournament," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It is a great accomplishment for Phil to receive a spot in the main draw, but it is something that he has earned through his strong play during the last year and a half . As for our women's team, it speaks volumes of the potential that Jackie and Melissa have for them to be selected for the qualifying draw as freshmen." Both Golf Teams Close Fall Schedules. . . Both golf teams will conclude their fall seasons at separate events this week as the men's squad will travel to Brentwood, Tenn. for the Belmont Fall Shootout on Monday and Tuesday. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,440 yard Old Nashville Golf and Athletic Club. The Vikings will open play on Monday (Oct. 15) with 36 holes before concluding the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday. This will be a really important week for us," head coach Steve Weir said. "We've played really well in the opening two rounds of tournaments to put ourselves in contention, but haven't been able to put together a complete final round. We need to find a way to be more consistent and learn how to close a tournament." The women's squad will also conclude their fall season on Monday and Tuesday by competing in the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. The 36-hole tournament is scheduled to take place at the par-71, 6,102-yard Deer Track Golf Club with CSU playing 18 holes each day. "We've struggled the last couple of weeks, so I'm hoping for a strong performance to close out the fall season," head coach Steve Weir said. "I think this course will suit our style of play more so than the other courses we have played this fall." Cross Country Has Week Off To Prepare For Horizon League Championships. . . After competing for seven straight weekends, Cleveland State will enjoy a week away from competitive action before running at the Horizon League Championships in Valparaiso, Ind., on Oct. 27. On Saturday (Oct. 13), CSU ran one of its best races of the season as it placed 11th of 18 teams at the Falcon Invitational at Forrest Creason Golf Course in Bowling Green. The Vikings, who had four runners record personal-best times, defeated Wright State and Detroit, the only other league schools who competed in the event. "This was a very successful race for us and I am extremely proud of the team," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "To finish ahead of two conference schools heading into the league championships will give us a lot of confidence. We are going to have some tough workouts over the next two weeks to prepare for the league championships, but the team is ready for it." Freshman Allison Craine was CSU's top finisher at Bowling Green for the seventh time in as many races this season as she placed 39th with a time of 19:10, just eight seconds off her personal best. Ali Ohliger (20:37), Jordan Hoile (21:02), Melisa Mazanec (22:09) and Amy Salzman (22:58) all registered personal bests for the Vikings at Bowling Green. Viking High Fives Kailey Klein: The women's basketball standout was one of five players and the only sophomore to be selected to the Preseason All-Horizon League team. Amy Benz: The volleyball freshman has already made a huge impact, moving into 10th place on the CSU single-season blocks list with 120 this season J'Nathan Bullock: The men's basketball junior earned a spot on the preseason All-Horizon League second team for the second straight season.
