CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior men's diver Dan Baiko and junior women's soccer player Jennifer Wieand have been selected as Cleveland State's Athletes of the Month for October. CSU Director of Athletics Lee Reed made the announcement on Friday afternoon. Baiko has started the season with a bang by winning all four diving events he has been entered in. The Horizon League Diver of the Week on Oct. 31, Baiko posted a career-best 291.75 points on the one-meter board and 311.75 points on the three-meter to sweep the diving events in a dual meet win against Green Bay on Oct. 27. Two weeks earlier, Baiko totaled 308.70 on the three-meter board and 278.70 on the one-meter to help the Vikings earn a dual meet win over Valparaiso in the season opener.
Wieand, who missed the entire 2006 season due to injury, has helped revitalize the Viking offense this season and tallied five points on two goals and one assist in October to raise her CSU single season school records to eight goals and 19 points. In addition, her 61 shots this season are a single season school-record. Wieand capped the month of October by earning a spot on the All-Horizon League second team, becoming just the third Viking all-time to earn the honor. She will lead the Vikings into a Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal match at Milwaukee on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 6:00 pm CST. The Athlete of the Month award was developed last year to honor Viking student-athletes for their on-field accomplishments. A female and male honoree will be selected at the conclusion of each month during the school year. Previous 2007-08 Honorees: |
