The Viking Report. . . Volleyball Heads To League Tourney As Winter Schedule Picks Up. . .
The last of the fall sports begins conference championship play this week and the schedule picks up dramatically for the CSU winter sports during a busy week of competition for the Vikings. Fresh off a win over Youngstown State for its 20th win of the season, the volleyball team will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take part in the Horizon League Championships. CSU enters the tourney as the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Youngstown State in an opening round match on Friday, Nov. 16 at 3:00 p.m. A win would advance the Vikings to face either Wright State or UIC on Saturday (Nov. 17) with the championship match slated for Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1:00 p.m. The men's basketball team has the busiest schedule ahead, traveling to Fairfax. Va. on Tuesday (Nov. 13) to face George Mason at 7:00 p.m. before heaing to Daytona Beach, Fla. to play three games in three days at the Glenn Wilkes Classic. CSU will face Georgia Southern at 12:00 noon on Friday (Nov. 16), Florida State at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) and Florida Atlantic at 12:00 noon on Sunday (Nov. 18). The women's basketball team plays just one game, hosting Akron on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center. The men's and women's swimming teams will play host to teams from Gannon, Baldwin-Wallace and Notre Dame (OH)(women only) on Tuesday, Nov. 13 for the Cleveland City Classic. Action begins with diving at 3:00 p.m. followed by the swimmine events at 5:00 p.m. The men's team will also travel to South Bend, Ind. to swim against Notre Dame on Friday (Nov. 16). The wrestling team will take part in its third open tournament in three weeks when the Vikings wrestle at the Ashland (OH) Open on Saturday. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. Men's Basketball Plays Four More Games On The Road. . . The men's basketball team faces the busiest week of its season when it plays four games to complete a season-opening five-game in 10 day road trip. The Vikings will play a mid-week matchup at George Mason (Fairfax, Va.) on Tuesday (Nov. 13) at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Florida for the second straight weekend. CSU will play three games in three days at the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., facing Georgia Southern at 12:00 noon on Friday (Nov. 16), Florida State at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) and Florida Atlantic at 12:00 noon on Sunday (Nov. 18). The Vikings opened their season on a great note, outscoring USF 14-3 over the last 4:29 to claim a 73-70 win. J'Nathan Bullock led CSU with 26 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals while Cedric Jackson added 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. "It was good to get a win last week at South Florida, but that was just one game," head coach Gary Waters said. "We won with heart, defense and free throw shooting. If we go out and play as hard in every game, then we will have a good chance of having success this season." Trailing 66-59 with 4:29 left, Waters challenged the Vikings to win the game with defense and CSU responded, allowing USF to score on just one of its final eight possession. Bullock keyed an 84-percent shooting night at the foul line (21-25) by tying a school record for free throw percentage in a game by making all 13 of his free throws. Included in that total were two free throws with 4.6 seconds left that iced the win. The performance was the eighth time in school history that a player was perfect from the line with at least 10 attempts in a game with the 13 free throws being the third-highest total. Women's Basketball To Host Akron On Saturday. . . Cleveland State (0-1) is out of competitive action for a week before hosting Akron for a nonconference game on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the Wolstein Center at 3:00 p.m. The Vikings are 15-22 all-time against Akron, including a 61-59 setback last season at home. "We played really well for 34 minutes against a good Wisconsin team, but I was disappointed with the way we finished the game," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "Even though we lost, there is a different feeling this time around. We are not satisfied with our performance and know that we can play at a higher level than we showed." The Vikings suffered an 82-62 setback to Big Ten power Wisconsin in Friday's (Nov. 9) season opener at the Wolstein Center. However, the score was much closer than the final indicated as CSU trailed by just three points after a Natalie Miller jumper with 6:14 to play. But the Badgers closed the game on a 21-4 run to earn the win. Angel Roque led the Vikings with a career-high 13 points, while Shawnita Garland added 12 points in her first collegiate contest. Kailey Klein chipped in 12 points and five boards. Three days earlier, CSU posted a 78-42 victory over Ashland in an exhibition game as Klein scored 23 points, while Brittany Korth added a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. The Vikings led 10-8 with 14:46 to play in the first half, but ran off 17 straight points, including three baskets from Klein, to take a commanding 25-8 lead with 6:34 to play in the first half. Volleyball Enters League Tourney As No. 2 Seed. . . Cleveland State (20-8, 13-3 HL) enters this weekend's Horizon League Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play seventh-seeded Youngstown State in a quarterfinal match on Friday, Nov. 16, at 2:00 p.m. CST on the campus of Milwaukee. Should the Vikings win, they would face either No. 3 Wright State or No. 6 UIC on Saturday in the semifinals at a time to be determined with the championship match slated for Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CST. All matches will be played at Milwaukee. "At tournament time, it's all about getting into a good rhythm and we are going to use this week to do that," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have battled hard all season long and need to play with a high level of intensity in each match we play from here on out." CSU concluded its regular season with a 3-1 triumph over Youngstown State on Saturday (Nov. 10) afternoon in Woodling Gym. The Vikings had five players record double-digit kills, led by Amy Benz who tallied a match-best 17. Beth Greulich added 15, while Alexis Korovich (14), Liz Fazio (12) and Jenni Ramminger (10) also reached double digits. The win enabled CSU to reach the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 1988 team went 20-22. In addition, the Vikings were a perfect 8-0 at home in league matches this season, the first time CSU did not lost a conference match at home during a season. Men's Soccer Season Ends In Shoot-Out Loss. . . The men's soccer team finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 3-12-3 as it was eliminated from the Horizon League Tournament in a shootout loss, 4-2, at Green Bay on Friday (Nov. 9) night. The teams played to a 0-0 tie during the 90 minutes of regulation and neither team could net a goal in either of the two 10 minute overtime periods, which sent the game into a shootout where the Phoenix converted all four of its kicks, while their goalkeeper managed two saves on CSU kicks. "It was an unfortunate way to end the season because we played so well," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "We had a lot of chances, but couldn't finish any of them. We have such a young team and I think that we grew up and learned a lot about who we are this season." Sophomore Mitch Boyer was selected to the All-Horizon League second team after leading the squad with six points on one goal and four assists. Wrestling Heads To Ashland Open. . . The early season schedule for the Viking wrestling team continues when CSU heads to Ashland, Ohio for its third open competition in the last three weeks. The Vikings will compete at Ashland on Saturday, Nov. 17 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Vikings are coming off a strong showing last weekend against a very competitive field at the Michigan State Open. Six CSU wrestlers placed in the two brackets at each weight class. The underclassmen stood out the most as freshman Rob Michaels won the 157 pound freshman/sophomore title, going 4-0 on the day including a 6-4 decision over North Carolina's Thomas Scotton in the championship bout. In other action in the freshman/sophomore brackets, Alex Hughes went 4-1 to finish second at 197, Eric Schwartz finished fourth at 285 and both Josh Palivoda (133) and Shaun Mitchell (149) earned sixth place finishes. Marcus Effner was the lone Viking to place in the open brackets, finishing fifth in the 165 pound weight class. "I'm really excited about our progress this season," head coach Jack Effner said. "We are getting the seasoning that we need to get ready for the EWL schedule. We faced some very good competition at Michigan State and our guys did a great job. You can practice all you want, but there is nothing like going against athletes from other schools to get better." Men's Swimming Prepares For Busy Week. . . Cleveland State (3-1) will have one of its busiest weeks of the season as the Vikings host the City College Meet on Tuesday, Nov. 13, before traveling to Notre Dame for a dual with the Irish on Friday (Nov. 16) at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday's meet, featuring Gannon and Baldwin Wallace, will begin with the diving events at 3:00 p.m. followed by the swimming events at 5:00 p.m. in Busbey Natatorium. "We are starting one of the toughest parts of our schedule this week," head coach Wally Morton said. "I am proud of the effort and enthusiasm that I have seen up to this point of the season, but we are still a long way from where we want to be." The Vikings were dealt their first dual loss of the season on Saturday, Nov. 10, as they dropped a 132-106 decision at Miami (OH). Jakub Dobies earned three wins as he captured the 200 freestyle (1:42.14), the 100 freestyle (45.82) and the 200 breaststroke (2:07.01). Marko Milenkovic won the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.04, while Zvonimir Androic claimed the 200 backstroke as he posted a time of 1:54.00. In addition, the 400 medley relay team of Androic, Dobies, Stephen Grove and Nedim Nisic tallied a win as they registered a time of 3:29.47. Women's Swimming Returns To Action. . . The CSU (0-4) women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 13, when they host the City College Meet in Busbey Natatorium. The event, which includes Baldwin Wallace, Gannon and Notre Dame (OH), is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. with the diving portion followed by the swimming events at 5:00 p.m. "We had a good week of practice and are looking forward to getting back to competitive action," head coach Wally Morton said. "The team has been practicing and competing very well and if they keep working hard, the wins will come." The Vikings have been out of action since a dual meet loss (170-55) to St. Bonaventure on Nov. 2 in Busbey Natatorium. Viking High Fives Angel Roque: The women's basketball sophomore set a career scoring high with 13 points in CSU's season opener against Wisconsin. Jakub Dobies: The men's swimming sophomore won three events at Miami (OH) over the weekend, claiming the 100 and 200 Free and the 100 Breast.
