CLEVELAND, Ohio - Freshman volleyball player Amy Benz and sophomore swimmer Jakub Dobies have been selected as Cleveland State's Athletes of the Month for December. CSU Director of Athletics Lee Reed made the announcement on Friday morning.

Benz capped her impressive rookie campaign by averaging 2.84 kills, 1.64 blocks and hitting .319 in leading CSU to a 5-2 mark in November. During CSU's three Horizon League Tournament matches, Benz totaled 39 kills and 13 blocks to earn league tournament MVP honors and help the Vikings earn a berth in the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Her best match came in a 3-1 win over Wright State in the semifinals as she finished with 19 kills and hit .432. In addition, Benz was selected to the All-Horizon League first team and was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.

Jakub Dobies

Dobies had a November to remember as he posted two school, one pool and one invitational record, while swimming two NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Miami (OH) Invitational. In addition, Dobies claimed three wins in a dual meet at Miami (OH), two at the City College Meet and two more at Notre Dame. He also won the 200 breaststroke in a dual at perennial power Ohio State. Dobies has captured the last three Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honors.

The Athlete of the Month award was developed last year to honor Viking student-athletes for their on-field accomplishments. A female and male honoree will be selected at the conclusion of each month during the school year.

Previous 2007-08 Honorees:
September: Nick Harpel (Men's Soccer) and Jenni Ramminger (Volleyball)
October: Dan Baiko (Men's Diving) and Jenni Wieand (Women's Soccer)
