NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Cleveland State men's and women's fencers got back in the full swing of things over the weekend, competing against some stiff competition at the Notre Dame Duals on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 20-21). The men's team went 5-4 while the women finished 3-5.

In men's foil action, senior Mike Merker and freshman Liran Gross paced the men with a 19-8 mark, while junior Leigh Pendergrass tallied a 12-9 record in women's foil.

"Both teams have worked really hard and its shows with the way they've performed to this point in the season," head coach Jim Sager said. "The men had a good showing over the weekend, beating some teams for the first time in a while. We really had some individuals step up when we needed them to. We've proven to this point that we are one of the top teams in the Midwest."

The Vikings travel to Madison, N.J. on Sunday (Jan. 28) to face Haveford, Lafayette and host Drew in their second straight weekend of dual meet action. The men's squad, which is ranked third in the Midwest, is off to an impressive 13-5 start, while the women are 9-8. Both teams defeated Lafayette by identical 23-4 scores in a meeting earlier this year.
