CHARLESTON, S.C. - Big innings in the first and sixth broke the game open as Cleveland State dropped a 15-3 decision at College of Charleston on Saturday at Patriots Point Field. CSU drops to 2-3 with the loss, while the Cougars improve to 6-1.

Junior outfielder Vasili Pahoulis led the Vikings with a 2-for-3 day with a pair of RBI. Sophomore outfielder Jeff Schellhammer walked twice and scored two runs.

College of Charleston's Chris Campbell went 3-for-5 with a double, scored three runs and drove in four runs. The Cougars' 1-5 hitters combined to go 11-for-18 on the day.

"We got outplayed in a lot of different areas," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "It's just another lesson for us to learn if we're going to go where we're trying to go.

"Hopefully, a lot of things came to light today and we'll learn from it."

College of Charleston, which advanced to the Atlanta NCAA Super Regional last year, put up four runs in the bottom of the first off of sophomore Jeremy Hartman (0-1). CSU answered with two in the top of the second when Pahoulis singled to left to score junior Josh Geric, who had walked earlier in the inning. College of Charleston threw home to get Geric and Pahoulis went to second on the throw, and he went to third on a Cougar throwing error. The miscue also allowed Schellhammer, who walked right after Geric, to score to pull within 4-2.

The Vikings added another run to pull within 6-3 in the top of the fourth when Schellhammer scored on a double by Pahoulis. The Cougars would answer with a run on a Campbell RBI groundout to go ahead 7-3.

College of Charleston put up seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by two-run doubles by Campbell and Alex Garabedian.

Hartman (0-1) took the loss after yielding six earned run on six hits in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Brian Long and senior Brandon Hewitt combined to work 6.1 innings in relief, allowing nine runs on 12 hits.

Nick Chigges (2-0) pitched six innings, striking out seven, to get the win for the Cougars.

The Vikings continue play in South Carolina on Sunday with a game versus Charleston Southern at 1:00 p.m.
