Richmond, Va. - The Vikings were able to put runs on the board during four innings in today's game, but CSU wasn't able to overcome a VCU four-run fifth inning, as they dropped the second game of the series, 10-7 this afternoon. With two outs in the first inning, the Vikings were able to rally and put two runs on the board taking an early 2-0 lead. "We had a hard time getting things started tonight on the mound, on offense and on defense," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "We will come back with a fresh start tomorrow and work on getting things started in all aspects of the game." Ryan Franks was the first Viking to get on base after singling to center field and scored after Tyler Wynn doubled to center. Bob Suitca followed up with the third straight hit for CSU, singling to right field, driving in Wynn and putting the Vikings up with an early 2-0 lead. A pair of CSU errors allowed the Rams to answer back with two runs of their own, one in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2. As the first Viking batter at the plate in the fourth inning, Wynn belted a homer to left center field putting the Vikings up 3-2 heading into the bottom of the inning. The Rams came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning putting the score at 4-3 going into the fifth inning, and wouldn't take long before putting four more runs on the board in the fifth inning, taking an 8-3 lead. The Vikings would close the gap to one run, scoring three in the sixth and one in the seventh, but wouldn't be able to close the game as VCU went on to score two runs in the eighth inning to take the 10-7 victory. Singles by Suitca, Kyle Shaffer and Chuck Gasti highlighted the sixth inning, driving in three runs, while an Alex Johnson single started off the seventh inning, before Johnson was able to score himself, putting the final Viking run on the board.
Coty Bates (0-1) started for the Vikings on the mound and was credited with the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings striking out two batters and allowing four runs. Michael Graham (2-1) got the win for the Rams, pitching five innings, striking out eight and allowing six runs. Tyler Wynn led the Vikings at the plate, going two-for-three, with two RBI and three runs, while Bob Suitca went two-for-four with three RBI. The Vikings will close the three game series tomorrow (March 7) with a 1:00 p.m. contest at The Diamond. |
