Richmond, Va. - The Cleveland State baseball team could only muster three hits during the contest, and VCU was able to get out to an early 10-0 lead, sweeping the weekend series, 13-1 in the final game at The Diamond.

"The VCU team just outplayed us today, it's that simple," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "We got behind early in the game and just didn't have enough to come back today. We will regroup and get back out there next weekend and see what we can do."

The Vikings lone run came in the sixth inning, when Alex Gnezda doubled to left field to get on base. Kyle Shaffer singled to left field with two outs, driving in Gnezda, but was stranded on base himself with Ryan Franks popping out during the next at bat.

CSU only had one other hit during the contest, with Bob Suitca singling in the second inning, and was the lone Viking to get on base during the inning.

The Rams were able to get out to an early 5-0 lead, after posting two runs in the first and three in the second, highlighted by a Joe Van Meter triple in the first inning. Over the first two innings the Vikings let up seven out of the 18 hits that the Rams recorded.

VCU went on to score five runs over the fourth and fifth innings before CSU was able to get on the board in the sixth inning, and closed them out with three additional runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Shaffer went one-for-four at the plate with one RBI, Suitca was one-for-three and Gnezda was one-for-three with one run.

Pat Shedlock (0-1) was the starter on the mound for CSU, taking the loss after pitching 1 1/3 innings. Jimmy Cowhy, Kris Hall, Nate Dick and Brandon Cooper also worked on the mound during the contest.

Seth Cutler-Voltz (2-0) recorded the win for VCU, working eight innings, striking out 10 and allowing all three Viking hits and the lone run.

The Vikings continue their early season road trips, traveling to Washington, D.C. next weekend for a three game series against George Washington beginning on Friday (March 12) at 2:30 p.m.
