    Martin, Tenn. - The Cleveland State baseball team dropped its series opener at Tennessee-Martin, 17-6 today at Skyhawk Field, recording six runs off of ten hits.

    Ryan Franks led the Vikings, going two-for-five at the plate with one run and three RBI, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning, just his second of the season.

    Franks' homer in the sixth inning was the first time the Vikings scored during the game, with Franks driving in Alex Johnson after he singled through the left side, his second hit on the day. Johnson's first hit came during the third inning when he tripled to right field with two outs, but was stranded on base following a Franks ground out.

    The Vikings made a rally in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, highlighted by a Chuck Gasti double to right center field. Scoring in the ninth inning for CSU were, Tyler Wynn, Bob Suitca, Gasti, and Dylan Schwegler.

    Wynn and Johnson also recorded two hits on the day, Wynn going two-for-four with one run and Johnson hitting two-for-five with one run.

    The Skyhawks got off to a strong start, scoring four runs in the first inning, one in the third, seven in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a commanding 17-6 lead.

    UTM was led by Drew Mason, who was a perfect four-for-four at the plate with one run, while Jordan Owen, went three-for-four at the plate with three runs and three RBI.

    After pitching three innings, Pat Shedlock (0-2) picked up the loss for the Vikings, allowing five runs and striking out two, while Jimmy Cowhy and Tim Clark combined for seven strike outs.

     

     

    Picking up the win for the Skyhawks was Coty Green (3-1), who pitched eight innings, striking out nine Vikings.

    The Vikings and the Skyhawks will play a double header tomorrow (March 20) to beat the predicted rain that is set to begin Saturday night and Sunday. The double header will start at 1:00 p.m. EST with the second game set to start 25 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
