Indianapolis, Ind. - The Cleveland State baseball team earned two spots on the post season All-Horizon League teams, as senior Kyle Shaffer was named to the all-league second team and freshman Chuck Gasti was named to the all-newcomer team. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday (May 25) afternoon. Shaffer, who earns a post season award for the first time during his CSU career, led the Vikings at the plate this season, finishing with a .336 batting average and a team-high 78 hits, including an 18-game hit streak. Shaffer's 78 hits ranks him third all-time for a single season at Cleveland State and third in the Horizon League this season, while his hitting streak that went from April 6 to April 30 ranks him fourth all-time. The Akron, Ohio native also had team-highs in runs (44), doubles (16) and RBI (59) during his final season, with 10 homers and three triples. "Kyle matured this season both physically and mentally and he finally settled into his own on the field," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "He led our team throughout the entire season at the plate, having one of the more consistent bats and he was also strong behind the plate for us which proves that he has definitely earned this honor." Gasti earns all-newcomer team honors following an excellent freshman season as a Viking, leading all CSU newcomers with a .295 batting average with 51 hits. The Carmichaels, Pennsylvania native ranked third on the team in triples (2) and fourth in runs (36), RBI (31), doubles (15) and home runs (8), while his eight homers also ranked him ninth in the league standings. "Chuck earned the opportunity to be in the line-up by working hard during pre-season work outs and practices, and throughout the entire season he proved that he deserved a starting spot in the line-up," Kocks said. "He has one of the best work ethics, which allows him to continue to get better on the field and off, and being named to the all-newcomer team is a great accomplishment for him and he will only continue to get better as the years go on."
The Vikings ended the 2010 season with a 12-43 overall record and set Cleveland State single season records for fielding percentage (.962) and doubles (119).
