CLEVELAND, Ohio - Shane Davis, a former catcher at Eastern Michigan, has been named an assistant baseball coach at Cleveland State. He will officially begin his duties in early August. Head coach Kevin Kocks made the announcement on Wednesday (July 15). "We are thrilled to have Shane join our staff at Cleveland State," Kocks said. "He has a tremendous amount of baseball knowledge and really understands the game. Shane will bring a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to our program. He has a great work ethic and has the ability to help out in all facets of our program." Davis arrives at CSU after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy last season. He was responsible for coaching the bullpen and catchers, while also assisting with the hitters. On the field, the Falcon catchers ranked first or second in the Mountain West Conference in every defensive category, including first in percentage of base runners caught stealing and tied for second in the least number of passed balls. Last summer, Davis served as the head coach of the Varsity Shop Training Center Bullets, an elite 18 and under summer league team. In addition, he was a volunteer assistant coach at Eastern Michigan in 2007-08, serving as the bench coach, managing hitters charts and coaching infielders. He was also a student assistant at EMU in 2006-07, working with pitchers and catchers. He was part of a staff that went 36-12 in the Mid-American Conference, including a regular season championship and tournament runner-up finish in 2007 and a West Division title and a MAC tournament championship in 2008. That team advanced to the Ann Arbor Regional as the fourth seed. Davis, who earned an education degree from EMU, was a four-year letterwinner as a catcher for the Eagles under coach Roger Coryell. Davis was also coached by former Major League catcher, Chris Hoiles.
He has coached eight players who have signed professional contracts. |
