Vikings Knock Off Kent State 67-41

Dec. 23, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ohio - J'Nathan Bullock had 24 points and 10 rebounds in his 100th start to help Cleveland State win their fourth straight game over Kent State by a final score of 67-41, Tuesday night at the Wolstein Center.

The Vikings improved to 9-4 this season, while the Golden Flashes fell to 5-6.

"We turned the corner last year and did some things that weren't totally expected of us," head coach Gary Waters said. "This year, we are doing what we are capable of doing."

Cleveland State was led by Bullock who notched his 14th career double-double scoring 24 points, moving him into sixth place on the CSU career scoring list with 1,433.

The Golden Flashes raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in just over two minutes as Brandon Parks and Chris Singletary were both able to knock down jumpers.

The Vikings then responded with an 11-5 run to take the lead eight minutes into the game.

The tandem of Bullock and Cedric Jackson combined to score 12 of the Vikings first 19 points, giving the Cleveland State an early 10-point lead.

After a pair of Trevon Harmon three pointers the Vikings extended their lead to 15 points with five minutes remaining in the first half.

With just under two minutes to go in the first half Cleveland State took charge, scoring seven points. Bullock led the run to end the first half scoring four points.

The Vikings defense held Kent State to just 17 first half points, shooting 6-25 from the floor.

Nathan started the second half with the hot hand scoring seven points helping the Vikings run their lead to 26 points with 15 minutes left in the game.

"J'Nathan had an outstanding game and George did what he does. He got some rebounds and played hard on defense," Waters said.

George Tandy provided the Vikings a career high 13 rebounds, eight of which came in the first half. Tandy also added seven points, two blocks and a pair of steals.

Jackson scored in double digits for the sixth time this year, finishing with 11 points and adding five rebounds to go along with his six assists.

"I thought our guys came to play today, especially on defense and they executed on offense," Waters said. "When we have 24 baskets and 14 assists, that's a pretty good ratio. We came into this game with two objectives. We wanted to hold them under 40 percent and out rebound them by 10 and we did both things."

The Vikings defense forced Kent State to shoot only .296 from the field to become the seventh CSU opponent in the last eight games to shoot under .400.

The Vikings also had an edge on the board for the fourth straight game, 46-36, including 17 offensive rebounds.

The Golden Flashes were led by Chris Singletary and Tyree Evans who each scored six points.

The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 27 when they take on Notre Dame College at the Wolstein Center. Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
