CHICAGO, Ill. - Cleveland State sophomore Anton Grady (Cleveland, Ohio) was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League second team, while the Vikings were picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll that was released on Tuesday afternoon at the Horizon League Men's Basketball Media Day.
The 6-foot-8 Grady played in all 33 games last season, serving as CSU's sixth man, while also making three starts. Grady averaged 8.5 points per game, while ranking sixth in the Horizon League in rebounding (6.4), fifth in blocked shots (1.4) and field goal percentage (112-210; .533), seventh in defensive rebounds (4.5) and eighth in offensive rebounds (1.9).
He upped those numbers to 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per night in the 18 Horizon League contests, scoring in double figures in 12 of those games.
The Vikings garnered 230 points in the preseason poll to finish fifth in the nine team league in voting conducted by the league's nine head coaches, sports information directors and select media members.
Valparaiso, the defending regular season champion, earned 382 points and 40 first place votes to claim the top spot. Detroit received the other four first place votes and 332 points to finish second. Green Bay was third with 283 points and was followed by Youngstown State (243), CSU, Milwaukee (178), Loyola (105), UIC (96) and Wright State (86).
Grady was joined on the second team by Ben Averkamp of Loyola, Keifer Sykes of Green Bay, Damian Eargle from Youngstown State and Nick Minnerath of Detroit.
The first team consisted of Preseason Player of the Year Ray McCallum of Detroit, the Valparaiso duo of Ryan Broekhoff and Kevin Van Wijk, Youngstown State's Kendrick Perry and Alec Brown of Green Bay. It is the same five that earned first team All-Horizon League accolades at the end of the 2011-12 season.
The Vikings open the 2012-13 regular season on Friday (Nov. 9) with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Grambling in the Wolstein Center. The opener will come on the heels of CSU's lone exhibition game of the preseason, against Malone at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 6.
