March 23, 2004

Williamsburg, Va. - The Cleveland State men's golf team shot a second-round score of 310 Tuesday to finish tied for ninth overall at the Kingsmill/William and Mary Invitational. The Vikings finished with a two-round total of 614 at the Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg, Va.

After shooting an opening round of 304 for fifth through the first round, the Vikings were unable to carry the success into the final day.

"We had some momentum heading into this morning," head coach Tom Porten commented, "but no one really got hot early, and we just struggled throughout the day."

Freshman Mike Rutgers led the Vikings, shooting a 148 (73-77) for a 12th-place tie. Sophomore Cody Harris trailed Rutgers with a 155 while senior Mike Bognar tallied a 158.

Georgetown took the team title, carding a 589 (298-291), while Navy golfer Billy Hurley shot a 141 (75-66) for the individual medalist honors.

"This tournament is a vast improvement over the [Austin Peay] tournament," coach Porten added. "Obviously we would have liked to have had the same success today that we had yesterday, but this will give us some good momentum heading into our home tournament."

The Vikings return home on April 2-3 to host the Cleveland State Invitational at the Red Tail Golf Club in Avon, Ohio.
