April 27, 2004
Galena, Ohio - Cleveland State shot a final round of 315 in adverse conditions at the Royal American Golf Links Tuesday, finishing with a fifth-place score of 917 (299-303-315) at the Horizon League Men's Golf Championship. Senior Billy Houle, the team's top scorer, was named to the all-league team for the second year in a row. Houle paced the Vikings at the par-72, 6,687-yard course, carding an eighth-place 225 (75-72-78). Freshman Ben Grandy trailed Houle by three shots, posting a 228 (73-74-81) for a 13th-place tie. Senior Mike Bognar (76-80-77) and freshman Mike Rutgers (75-78-80) finished tied for 19th with scores of 233. Houle finished the season as the team-leader in stroke average with a 76.0 in 31 rounds. He earned his second career medalist finish at the Bullock Collegiate Classic on April 18-19 and was named Horizon League Men's Golf Athlete of the Week following the performance. "It's good to see Billy recognized for the season he had," head coach Tom Porten said. "He really turned it up this spring and showed how good he can be when he won last week at the Bullock Classic. I wish we could have come out and played that way this weekend." Wright State (290-295-312-20) edged out Butler (294-290-313-21) in a tiebreaker for the top team honor after both teams finished the 54-holes deadlocked at 897. Nate Komsa of Youngstown State took medalist honors by one stroke over Butler's John Novak, recording a 217 (72-70-75) to Novak's 218 (71-69-78).
