Contact: Greg Murphy

FARMINGTON, Pa. - Cleveland State opened the 2008 fall season with a 307 and is tied for 10th place out of 12 teams following the first round at the Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday.

The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the par-72, 7,269-yard Nemacolin Woods G.C.

Miami (Ohio) carded a one-under-par 289 and leads the field after the opening round. Purdue is in second place following a 295 and is followed by Penn State (300), Virginia Commonwealth (302) and Missouri and Richmond who are tied for fifth place at 303.

The Vikings are tied for 10th place with Ball State, five shots ahead of 12th place Toledo (312).

"We started out pretty good, but really could not get anything going on the back nine," head coach Steve Weir said. "We are by no means out of this tournament. We'll have to work on a few things and get some things straightened out and hopefully come back with two better rounds."

Junior Patrick Elber fired a three-over-par 75 to lead CSU and is tied for 15th place. Senior Jake Scott shot a 76 in the opening round and is tied for 24th.

The second round will be played on Monday (Sept. 1).
