Sept. 12, 2005

CHARDON, Ohio - TCU is at six-over after putting together solid rounds of 284-290 (574) to take a six-shot lead after 36 holes at the 2005 Cleveland State Invitational presented by Fairmount Minerals. Cleveland State opened with a 291 to stand third after the first round, but slipped to a 306 in the afternoon to fall into a tie for 12th at 597 (+29).

Playing at par 71 for the first time, Sand Ridge Golf Club proved to be a stern test for some of the nation's better teams. No team is under par after 36 holes and just five individuals will start the final round in red numbers.

The Horned Frogs lead Kent State (580) by six shots, while Xavier is just a shot back (581), all alone in third.

Kansas' Gary Woodland leads the individual competition at nine-under (133), after consecutive rounds in the 60s (67-66). Kansas State's Ben Kern, the only other player to break par twice, is in second at six-under (68-68-136). Xavier's Andy Connell opened with a 74, but responded with a competitive course record of 65 to jump into third at three-under (139).

Mike Rutgers paced the Vikings with consecutive 74s to stand in a tie for 33rd at 148. Steve Weir eagled the 18th hole en route to an opening round 68, but struggled to an 81 in the afternoon. He is tied for 37th at 149, while Doug Barber (73-77) is tied for 42nd at 150.

"I was pleased with how we came out firing in the opening round," CSU head coach Tom Porten said. "We really put together a great team score on a very difficult course. The slip in the second round was more due to lack of execution rather than lack of effort. We're going to come back out tomorrow a look to climb back into the top 10."

Play concludes at Sand Ridge on Tuesday (Sept. 13) with the final 18 holes which are slated to begin with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
