CHICAGO - It took three tournaments, but Cleveland State finally figured out the second round. After struggling in their first two events to put together back-to-back solid rounds, the Vikings turned in a season-low 283 and stand in second place at the John Dallio Memorial Invitational. CSU was led by junior Mike Rutgers, who is in a three-way tie for first place heading into the final round. DePaul is hosting the 54-hole event at the 6,968 yard, par 72 Prairie Landing Golf Club. Saint Louis leads the 15-team field with a two-under par 574, while CSU lurks nine shots back at 583 (+7). Western Illinois will complete Tuesday's final pairing after carding a 590 (+14). It's a case of deja vu all over again for Rutgers, who finds himself atop the Dallio Memorial leaderboard for the second consecutive year. Rutgers opened with a season-low 68 thanks in part to six birdies. He added a 73 in the afternoon to finish at three-under par (141). He is tied for the overall lead with Saint Louis' David Perritt and Southern Illinois' Andrew Gwinup. Last year, Rutgers finished fourth after shooting a school-record 66 in the second round. Senior Steve Weir is in a tie for 18th at plus-four (148), while sophomore Doug Barber turned in a career-low 69 in the afternoon to move into a tie for 27th with junior teammate Ben Grandy at 149 (+5). Barber was at plus-three through 11 holes, but closed with four birdies and an eagle. "We really rebounded from a tough first round to give ourselves a shot a shooting a school record in the afternoon," CSU head coach Tom Porten said. "We have to get off to a quick start tomorrow morning and put some pressure on Saint Louis early on."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday morning. Cleveland State, Saint Louis and Western Illinois will tee off from 8:40 - 9:20 a.m. CDT. Team Leaders Individual Leaders Cleveland State Individuals |
