Steve Weir Advances To Match Play At U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

July 13, 2005

LEBANON, Ohio - Cleveland State senior golfer Steve Weir posted a 36-hole total of 144 (+4) to advance to the match play portion of the 2005 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Playing in just his second USGA event, Weir earned the No. 24 seed and will face No. 41 Nick Obie, in the round of 64 at the 6,966-yard Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio.

A native of Brunswick, Weir is one of just seven Ohioans in the field of 156 who began stroke play on Monday (July 11). He carded a one-over, 71 in the opening round and followed that up with a 73 on Tuesday.

"The course is really hard and dry and playing tough," Weir said. "I had to adapt my ball flight to the greens and I was really pleased with how I was striking the ball. Now I just have to go out in match play and act like I'm back at home playing against my buddies."

Anthony Kim shot a 65 in the second round to earn medalist honors and the No. 1 seed at 136 (-4). He was just one of seven players under par.

Weir sat out last season to meet NCAA residency requirements after transferring to CSU from Baldwin-Wallace.

The field will be trimmed to eight after 36 holes on Thursday, and is set to conclude with Saturday's (July 16) 36-hole final. The winner receives an invitation to compete in the 2006 Masters Tournament.
