CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State senior Jake Scott was named one of the top 50 players in the nation to watch in the 2008-09 GolfWorld.com season preview. Scott, a first team All-Horizon League selection after earning medalist honors at the Horizon League Championship last season, is the lone player from the league to make the list. His first place finish allowed the Vikings to win the team title and advance to the NCAA Central Regional for the second time in the last three seasons. "This is quite an honor for Jake," head coach Steve Weir said. "To be mentioned as one of the top 50 golfers in the country is something very special. He has worked extremely hard to get to this point and I expect him to have a very special season. "Jake has been a tremendous leader for this team over the last two years. He knows what it takes to win and has consistently shown the younger players what it takes to compete at this level." The Strongsville native led the team with a school-record 72.7 scoring average last season in 33 rounds. He recorded eight top-10 finishes in 13 events and won the Kent State Invitational with rounds of 69-65 (134) at Windmill Lakes G.C. in late April. His final round 65 ranks as the second lowest round in school history. In addition, he had runner-up finishes at the Butler Spring Invitational and the Wright State Invitational. A two-time first team All-Horizon League selection, Scott holds the school record for career scoring average by more than one stroke (74.5) and is tied for the school-record for career tournament wins (3). The Vikings open the 2008 fall season this weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) when CSU plays in the 54-hole Penn State Invitational at Nemacolin Woods G.C. CSU will host the CSU-Telich Sun Life Financial Invitational on Sept. 29-30 at Sand Ridge G.C. in Chardon, Ohio.
