CSU Men's Golfers Open Season At EDS/Detroit Titans Invitational

Sept. 12, 2001

The Cleveland State Men's Golf Team kicked off the 2001 fall season with a seventh place finish at the EDS/Detroit Titans Invitational, held at Arbor Hills Country Club in Jackson, Mich., on Monday and Tuesday.

After an impressive first round score of 287, which placed the Vikings in a three-way tie for second, scores of 296 and 291 in the final two rounds dropped the team to their final position in the rankings.

Junior Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, ON/E. J. Brennan) was a bright spot for the Vikes, as he posted scores of 69-77-69--215 for a team-leading ninth-place finish. With the loss of graduating senior and team captain Craig Hicks, Komsa's finish is an encouraging sign that he is ready to take over the leadership role.

Sophomore Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, OH/Normandy), continued the success from his rookie campaign last year, finishing in a tie for 16th with a score of 72-72-75--219. Junior P.J. Myers (Westlake, OH/St. Ignatius) placed one stroke behind Bognar in a tie for 22nd overall with a 73-76-71--220.

The field of eleven teams was dominated by Horizon League foes, with Wisconsin-Green Bay winning the event by carding an 860. Butler and Detroit finished second and third with scores of 864 and 865, respectively. Green Bay's Brian Berggren shot rounds of 67-70-70--207 to take medalist honors.
