Men's Golf: Preparing to Host Own Invitational

Sept. 26, 2008

Hey everyone, just thought I'd let you all know what the Men's Golf team has been up to this season.

We started off at the Penn State Invitational at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa. The Mystic Rock course there used to host the 84 Lumber Classic, a PGA Tour event, and we could sure tell it was a tour-quality course. It was a great way to kick off the season.

Our next tournament was hosted by Bowling Green, and we played Stone Ridge Golf Club. The course was playing very firm, fast and windy, and the scores certainly reflected that. We played a few Horizon league teams there, including rival Detroit, and defeated them all thoroughly with a tournament-low final round, as well as ending up finishing 4th in the field of 13.

And then there was Kansas. Not exactly sure what happened there, but it certainly wasn't the best golf we've played. The whole event was very windy, and the course was soggy beyond belief, but we had some problems we usually don't have out there. I, for example, make a decision to take a belly putter to the tournament, instead of using my regular putter, and I think it cost me and the team quite a few strokes. We ended up with a disappointing 13th place finish of 16 teams.

But we're all very excited about the Telich Sun Life Invitational, our host tournament, coming up next week! It's being hosted at Sand Ridge Golf Club, out in Chardon, and we certainly hope some of you fellow athletes and fans can come out and enjoy the course. We have most of our rival Horizon League teams coming, as well as some big rivals like South Dakota State coming to play, so it ought to be an exciting tournament.

We've been practicing hard for the past few weeks, getting ready to take on the field. I feel like we're more prepared than every for this tourney, and I certainly expect fully to see our first victory of the year!

That's all for now, but we'll keep you all updated on the rest of the fall season.
