Men's Golf Signs Perry Standout Monas

Contact: Alan Ashby

Nov. 9, 2006

CLEVELAND - Kent Monas, a 2006 state qualifier from Perry, Ohio, became Cleveland State head golf coach Brian Varsey's first recruit when he signed a National Letter of Intent with the Vikings on Thursday (Nov. 9). Monas will attend CSU and compete for the men's golf team beginning in the fall of 2007.

"Kent is a very dedicated, hard-working student-athlete," Varsey said. "He's very patient on the course, manages his game well and knows how to finish with a lead. He's a big, strong player who will be a great addition to our team."

Monas, who is 6-6, 245 pounds, finished 13th at the 2006 Ohio state championship after qualifying as an individual. A 2005-06 Northeast Ohio Golf Coaches Association first team selection and a three-time conference player of the year, he has nine junior titles to his credit and made his first appearance in the Junior PGA Championship in the summer of 2006. Monas, who carries a 3.79 GPA, was a two-year letterwinner in basketball at Edgewood H.S., before transferring to Perry H.S. for the 2005-06 season.

The Cleveland State men's golf team is the defending Horizon League champions. The Vikings made their first NCAA Regional appearance last May and will attempt to defend their league title on April 30 - May 1, 2007 at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio.
