CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's soccer team will face outside competition for the first time this season this weekend with its first of three exhibition matches.
The Vikings will travel to St. Bonaventure Saturday, Aug. 17, at 2:00 p.m. in its opening preseason friendly. CSU will then host Notre Dame (Ohio) Thursday, Aug. 22, and Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday, Aug. 25, to conclude preseason action.
Cleveland State opened its preseason camp with its first training session this past Wednesday morning. In doing so, the Vikings welcomed seven student-athletes to the program for the first time, including three transfers, while Andrew Nicholas took part in his first fall camp after joining the team for the 2019 spring semester.
Six Vikings return that started at least 10 matches last season, with five of those six competing in at least 14 of the squad's 15 fixtures in 2018. CSU's top three leaders in goals all return while two defenders that started at least 11 matches are back in the fold for 2019.
Head coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic will lead the Vikings in his first season as head coach in 2019. Since the Horizon League adopted its current tournament format, the Vikings are tied for the league lead in tournament appearances and pace the circuit in earning top-four seeds.
