Nick Harpel Named Horizon League Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, OH - After allowing just one goal in two matches last week, Cleveland State freshman goalkeeper Nick Harpel has been honored as the Horizon League Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday (Sept. 10) afternoon. It marks the first time since Stephen Ademolu was honored on Sept. 22, 2003 that the Vikings have had a league Player of the Week. Harpel continued his torrid pace to open the 2007 season as he made eight saves and posted his second consecutive shutout in a 1-0 win at Western Michigan last Wednesday (Sept. 4). It was the first time since 1996 that CSU recorded back-to-back shutouts. Harpel then logged six saves in a 1-1 tie at Kentucky on Sunday (Sept. 9). The goal, which was scored in the 58th minute, was the first Harpel allowed all season and ended his scoreless streak at 282:40. A native of Toledo, Harpel leads the league with an 0.27 goals against average, allowing just one goal which registering 21 saves in 335 minutes of action. CSU (2-1-1) will return to action this weekend with a pair of matches at the UNLV adidas Invitational. The Vikings will play Cal State Northridge on Friday (Sept. 14) at 6:00 pm before facing Cal Poly on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 1:00 pm.
