Youngstown, Ohio - Josh Gonzalez, Todd Winchell, Mark deSwardt and Deni Gasparin each won two individual events, leading Cleveland State to victories over both Canisius and Malone Friday evening. The Vikings beat Canisius 157-68 and topped Malone 169-42 in the triple dual meet. "Tonight the men's team did very well for how we were swimming everybody," head coach Wally Morton said. "We were swimming with an off lineup to get people in different events that they might otherwise never swim for us. We experimented with the lineup just to see what will work in future meets and who will do a good job for us in which events." Gonzalez won both the 1- and 3-meter boards, with 253.55 and 213.50 points respectively. The Vikings went one-two in the diving events, Matt DiMasso placed second in both events with 243.85 and 212.65 points. Winchell touched first in the 200 IM ( 2:02.10) and the 500 free (4:48.61). In both races the Vikings also placed second, with Berry Thompson taking second in the 200 IM (2:02.14) and Alex Cohara finishing after Winchell in the 500 free (4:52.8). The Vikings finished first and second in the 50 and the 100 free, with Gasparin winning both events in 22.10 and 47.54 respectively. Jakub Dobies finished second in the 50 free in a time of 22.57 while Justin Hill touched in 48.52 to finish second in the 100 free. deSwardt placed first in the 1,000 free and the 200 breast for CSU in times of 9:32.50 and 2:15.88, giving the Vikings a total of 10 individual victories.
"Mark did a great job for us once again tonight," Morton said. "He won two individual events and was also on the winning relay. I am always confident that he will give us great performances no matter the night, or the event that we put him in." Also winning races for Cleveland State was Graham Thoresen in the 200 free (1:46.11) and Zvonimir Androic in the 200 fly (1:57.21). The team of Grove, deSwardt, Keith Everhart and Thompson worked together to finish first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:37.29, more than six seconds faster then the Canisius relay that finished third. The Vikings return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 10) when they host the City College Meet with diving starting at 3:00 p.m. and swimming events starting at 5:00 p.m. John Carroll, Gannon and Notre Dame (OH) will travel to Busbey Natatorium to take part in the meet. |
