Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team swept the City College Meet tonight, as they topped Gannon 158-68, John Carroll 157-75 and Notre Dame College 156-67. The Vikings won nine individual events and two relays during the meet.

"Overall I am very pleased with our performances tonight," head coach Wally Morton said. "We are going through some heavy training right now, and we are still swimming season best times which says a lot for this team."

Mark deSwardt, Deni Gasparin and Josh Gonzalez each recorded two individual victories for the Vikings, in swimming and diving respectively. deSwardt won the 400 IM in a time of 4:01.05, just off program record pace and the 500 free (4:37.02). Gasparin recorded wins in the 100 free (47.65) and the 100 breast (58.23), beating second place Jakub Dobies by three seconds. Gonzalez won both boards for the Vikings, scoring 262.72 in the 1-meter and 300.30 in the 3-meter event.

"We are really starting to learn about some of our swimmers and realize what kind of impact the second, third and fourth place finishers can have on the final score," Morton said. "Multiple people had season best times tonight and they can only improve from here, which will make this season a very exciting one to watch."

Five other Vikings recorded individual victories tonight, with Graham Thoresen starting the meet with a victory in the first individual event the 1,000 free (9:43.78). Berry Thompson touched first in the 50 free (21.19), besting his previous times he has set this season and winning the event for the third time this year.

Todd Winchell won the 100 fly, finishing in 51.60 just out-touching second place Keith Everhart who finished in 51.72. Winning the 100 back for CSU was Zvonimir Androic with a time of 53.40.

Both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay were victorious for CSU tonight. Colin Haner, Justin Hill, Dobies and Winchell teamed up for the 200 medley, winning in a time of 1:34.59. The 200 free relay of Mike Marsico, Stephen Grove, Everhart and Thompson finished first in a time of 1:24.58.

Matt DiMasso also made a strong showing for the Viking divers, placing second on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, recording 259.12 and 233.25 points respectively.

"I am excited to get back into conference action when Valparaiso comes to town on Saturday," Morton said. "The competition will be great this weekend, as St. Bonaventure is one of the top teams in the A-10 and always has a strong men's program. This will be a true contest of what kind of swimmers we are, coming out and swimming in two quads in one week."

The Vikings return to action when they host Niagara, St. Bonaventure and Valparaiso on Saturday (Nov. 14) with diving starting at 12:00 noon and swimming starting at 1:00 p.m.
