Carr Dives To Fourth-Place Showing At One Meter But NCAA Bid In Doubt

March 11, 2006

Columbus, Ohio - Thatcher Carr's bid for an NCAA Championship appearance may have come up just short at the Zone C Qualifying Meet on Saturday (March 11), as the Viking senior finished in fourth-place on the one-meter boards with a score of 592.90. Teammate Chris Dalman finished just behind Carr in the points with an eighth-place score of 565.60.

Carr's fourth-place score leaves him just our of range of qualifying for the NCAA Championship. The top two finishers at each event - one meter, three meter and platform - earn automatic bids to the tournament, but if the same diver places in the top two in more than one event, the bid moves down to the third place finisher.

"They both represented themselves well," head diving coach Rich Karban said. "There is such a small margin for error in a competition like this with so many great divers, but they both performed to the best of their capabilities."

Carr rallied from a fifth-place showing in the preliminaries to move up a spot in the finals. He came less than 26 points shy of finishing in third and giving himself a realistic chance of advancing to the championships.

Carr got out to a fast start in the finals, picking up high marks on his first three dives, but a tough showing in his fourth dive cost him valuable points. Meanwhile, Dalman lit up the scoreboard in the first four rounds before struggling in his fifth-round dive.
