Dobies And Gonzalez Earn Horizon League Weekly Honors

    Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team swept the Horizon League weekly awards for the period Oct. 26-Nov. 1, with senior Jakub Dobies earning swimmer of the week honors and sophomore Josh Gonzalez named diver of the week.

    The league office made the announcement on Wednesday (Nov. 4).

    2009 All-American Dobies recorded first place finishes in the 100 breast (57.06) and the 200 breast (2:05.88) in a double dual meet at Notre Dame and against Miami (OH) last Saturday (10/31).

    Dobies also finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.41, and teamed with Todd Winchell, Stephen Grove and Mike Marsico to place second in the 200 medley relay (1:34.03).

    "Jakub just continues to get better, he has had an outstanding fall training period, and I have never seen him more dedicated, focused and harder working then the way he is training at this time," head coach Wally Morton said. "He understands that with our team, the 200 IM and 200 breast are very important for our team's success and in those races he has shown great improvements over the past years and he is set to have a great senior seasons for us."

    In just his second meet as a Viking, Gonzalez recorded a third and fourth place finish against Miami (OH) in the 3-meter and 1-meter boards respectively, while he placed fifth in the 3-meter event and fourth in the 1-meter event against Notre Dame. He scored 254.30 points on the 1-meter board and 257.00 points in the 3-meter event.

    "This is Josh's first year at CSU and we are very happy to have him as part of the CSU diving team," diving coach Rich Karban said. "He is going to be a strong competitor for us over the next three years and it is good to see that his hard work is paying off for him."

     

     

    Dobies earned his second career award, while Gonzalez is honored with his first weekly accolade giving the Vikings their first two awards of the 2009-10 season.

    The Vikings return to action this Friday (Nov. 6) when they travel to Youngstown State to face Canisius and Malone in a double dual meet at 5:00 p.m.
