WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up its 2016 fall season Sunday, finishing play at the Wake Forest Invitational. The highlight on the final day of play for the Vikings was William Malm capturing the D1 Singles title.
"Overall this was a great tournament for us to finish the fall season at, we faced some tough competition at all spots in the lineup and everyone was able to pick up some good wins against solid opponents throughout the weekend," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It was great to see William win his singles draw, and although he fell in the championship match, Ben had a great weekend of singles tennis. We can now look forward to the spring season and prepare for our dual match slate."
Malm, who went 3-0 on the weekend in singles play, picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Julian Chousa of Wofford in the title match and brought home Cleveland State's only main draw title.
Benjamin Slade, who also advanced to the championship match in the C2 Singles draw, dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 decision to Jorge Alfonzao of Tennessee Tech in the title match. Slade finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles record.
