Men’s Tennis Closes Homestand Against Buffalo, Xavier & Wooster

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will close out its current homestand this weekend, hosting a trio of matches in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion against Buffalo, Xavier and Wooster.

The Vikings split their matches against Ball State and No. 18 Michigan, picking up a 5-2 win against the Cardinals and dropping a matching 5-2 decision against the nationally ranked Wolverines. Cleveland State's victory over Ball State extended its winstreak to five matches - a winstreak that was then snapped against the Wolverines.

Cleveland State In The MMTP
2019 marks the fourth season in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, with the Vikings owning a 21-8 record in the MMTP. So far this season, the Vikings stand at 4-1 when playing at home, and will be closing out an eight-match homestand this weekend.

Mostardi Named #HLMTEN Singles Player Of The Week
Earlier this week, junior Nico Mostardi was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, marking the second straight week that a Viking picked up the honor. Mostardi went 2-0 at No. 1 singles last weekend, picking up wins against Ball State and Michigan, marking his second and third straight wins and sixth victory out of his last eight matches.

…Mostardi Cracks Top-10 On CSU Singles Wins List
With his two victories last weekend, Nico Mostardi became the 11th Viking all-time to record 60 career singles wins and earned a spot on the CSU Singles Wins List. Entering the weekend, Mostardi is tied for 10th with his 60 victories, and needs just two more wins to move into a tie for ninth place on the list.

Bilinovich Extends Singles Winstreak
Last weekend, Clark Bilinovich posted a 2-0 singles record, extending his current singles winstreak to six straight matches. Bilinovich picked up a straight set win against Ball State, and then battled for a three-set win against Michigan, with both victories coming at No. 6 singles. For the year, Bilinovich owns a team-best 17-7 singles record, while he is tied for the team-lead with eight singles wins this spring.

Terry Closing In On Win #50
Entering this weekend's matches, sophomore Matthew Terry is just seven wins shy of notching his 50th career victory. Terry, who has 43 career wins, owns a 15-9 singles record this season, and would become the first Viking to reach the 50-win milestone as a sophomore with seven more wins this year.

Slade Moves Up CSU Singles Wins List
Following a straight-set win at No. 4 singles against Ball State last weekend, senior Benjamin Slade moved into a tie for seventh place on the CSU Singles Wins List, entering the weekend with 71 career victories. Slade, who became the eighth Viking all-time to reach the 70-win milestone earlier this year, needs just two more wins to move into sixth place on the list.

Malm & Phillips Earn Spot On CSU Doubles Wins List
Last time out, Luke Phillips and William Malm became the 11th Viking tandem all-time to record 20 career victories, picking up their 20th win with a 6-3 decision against nationally ranked Michigan. Malm and Phillips are now tied for ninth on the CSU Doubles Wins List, and are tied for the team-lead with four doubles wins this spring.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 17th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 241-174 dual match record. Last year, Etzkin guided the Vikings to their sixth Horizon League Tournament title and sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament, while posting his 13th winning season at Cleveland State.

Scouting The Bulls
Buffalo enters Friday's match with an even 3-3 record on the spring, most recently dropping a 6-1 match at Penn State. Friday's match against the Vikings is part of a five-match roadswing for the Bulls. 

This will be the ninth meeting between the two teams over the last 17 seasons, with Buffalo owning a 6-2 advantage in the overall series.

Scouting The Musketeers
Xavier enters the weekend with a 3-8 record this spring, and will take on Buffalo prior to Sunday's match against the Vikings. Last time out, the Musketeers picked up back-to-back wins against Wright State and Northern Kentucky, snapping a seven-match losing skid.

This will be the 13th meeting between the two teams during head coach Brian Etzkin's tenure, with Cleveland State owning a 7-5 edge in the all-time series.

Scouting The Fighting Scots
Wooster currently stands at 3-2 this spring, and will take on Northern Kentucky prior to Sunday's match against the Vikings. 

Sunday's match will be the first meeting between the two teams.
