EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After turning in a strong doubles performance on Friday, the Viking men's tennis team turns its attention to singles on Saturday at Michigan State's Stan Drobac Invitational and dominated. In three rounds of singles play, the Vikings went 17-5 against individuals from Michigan State, IUPUI and Dayton, including an incredible 16-2 mark by athletes competing in the top six positions. Consequently, CSU is guaranteed to advance at least four singles and two doubles teams into the title matches of each flight on Sunday, with four other Viking singles players possible advancing as well. "These guys dominated today," CSU assistant coach Jay Tee said. "We started the day against Michigan State and boy, were we ready. We have struggled against MSU in the past, but we came out ready to play and turned out some of our best tennis of the fall. "It just took off from there and we continued to play well against both IUPUI and Dayton. It was like our guys were all feeding off the success of their teammates," Tee added. The Vikings started the day by splitting eight singles matches against Michigan State, though two of the CSU losses came in the final two lineup spots giving the Vikings an 4-2 record in the top six flights. "If you count in our doubles win over Michigan State yesterday, it would be like defeating them 5-2," Tee said. Senior Phil Orno continued his strong fall by winning all three of his singles contests in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Michigan State's Denis Bogatov. Yannick Goosens, playing in the second flight, Rob Fox in the fourth flight and Chris Klepatz in the sixth flight each went 3-0 to advance to the title match of the flight while Ryan Hamning (3rd flight) and freshman J.J. Haley each dropped a three-set decision to a Michigan State opponent and then bounced back to win their next two matches.
