CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team will continue the 2013 spring season this weekend, traveling to Duquesne and Youngstown State for two matches. The Vikings will first take a quick break from Horizon League action as they face Duquesne at 6:30 p.m. on Friday (March 29), and will then continue the league slate against YSU at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 30).
Against Duquesne: The Vikings stand at 5-2 against Duquesne over the past 10 seasons. The Dukes enter the weekend on a four-match win streak, defeating Detroit, Temple, Dayton and Saint Joseph's during that stretch and stand at 11-3 overall this spring.
Against Youngstown State: Cleveland State is 13-4 against YSU under head coach Brian Etzkin, and has won nine out of its last 10 matches against the Penguins. YSU is currently 8-5 on the season and will face Idaho State prior to Saturday's contest. The Penguins also opened league play against Detroit last weekend - earning a 4-3 victory over the Titans.
First Sweep Of The Season: Last Sunday Cleveland State posted its first 7-0 sweep of the season, picking up all seven points against Detroit. Along with the six singles victories the Vikings also picked up wins in all three doubles matches - the third time this season that CSU has done so. Four of CSU's singles victories came as straight set wins, which ties the record for most straight set victories in a match this season.
HL Opening Victory: With Sunday's 7-0 victory over Detroit, the Vikings have now posted wins in eight straight league openers. Dating back to the 2006 season, CSU has defeated Youngstown State (5 times), Detroit (twice) and Wright State in its first league contest of the year - with three of the wins coming as 7-0 sweeps.
...CSU vs. Detroit: Sunday's victory also kept CSU's record perfect against the Titans, as the Vikings are now 6-0 against Detroit under head coach Brian Etzkin.
Kuelker Reaches 50 Career Wins: With his victory at No. 2 singles against Detroit, junior Matt Kuelker reached 50 wins for his career, becoming the seventh Viking to reach the milestone. Kuelker currently ranks seventh on the all-time singles wins list at CSU and needs just three more victories to move into sixth place on the list.
