Sept. 18, 2009
Contact: Martin Rickman The Cleveland State men's tennis team started their fall season off with double vision, as the Vikings won four doubles matches in the first day of the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The day was highlighted by a quarterfinal berth for the senior team of Phil Orno and Ryan Hamning, who went undefeated in singles play during the 2008-09 season. Orno and Hamning, both All-Horizon first team selections from a year ago, defeated Tunis and Vols from IUPUI, 8-3. In their second round matchup, they took down Theodore and McLoughlin from Horizon League rival Butler, 8-5. Junior Rob Fox had a stellar first day as well, advancing in the No. 3 singles flight with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Ervin from Butler before winning a first round doubles draw with sophomore Yannick Goossens, 8-4, over IUPUI's Klingenberg and Schaefer. The pair dropped their second match against Calligari and Hall from Louisville. "Rob got us started today by beating a guy he lost to in the regular season last year," head coach Brian Etzin said. "He looked really agile on the court and was playing overall strong tennis today. It was good to see him get that win and follow it up with another big win in doubles play." Despite the doubles success, the Vikings dropped seven of their nine matches in singles play. Aside from Fox's win, freshman Jay Jones earned his first career collegiate victory in the No. 4 flight. In the match, Jones defended well and picked his spots to attack and move off the baseline, leading to a two set win. "It was good to see Jay pick up a win today to start off his career," Etzkin said. "That said, we have some work to do." "We lost a lot of close sets that I think will go our way at the end of the season, but we really need to keep our focus and intensity and build off of our results from today."
