CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team will compete in its final fall tournament before the ITA Midwest Regional this weekend, taking part in the 34th annual Ball State Fall Invitational. Action will run from Friday (Sept. 28) through Sunday (Sept. 30) at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
The Vikings will be joined by eight other teams at the BSU Invite; Butler, Dayton, Illinois State, IPFW, IUPUI, Louisville, Marquette and the host Cardinals. The tournament will include two draws of 32 singles players and two draws of 16 doubles teams.
Cleveland State had a very successful tournament last weekend, brining home both doubles titles from the Purdue Invitational. Ali Shabib and Niklas Jonsson picked up their second straight doubles title in the Flight A bracket, with victories over Valparaiso, Butler, Green Bay and Purdue. The Viking duo of Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Kuelker also claimed a doubles title, following wins over IPFW, Toledo, Butler/WMU and Green Bay in the Flight B draw.
Both doubles teams of Shabib/Jonsson (8-0) and Kuelker/van der Vloet (4-0) hold perfect records on the season - the first doubles teams to be undefeated after the first two fall tournaments since the 2009-10 season. Rob Fox and John Haley were the last two Vikings to hold a perfect record after the first two weekends in the fall, posting a 4-0 record during 2009.
After the first two tournaments of the year, Matt Ford leads the Vikings with a 6-1 singles record, while freshman Joe VanMeter stands at 5-2. Kuelker and Shabib each have three singles wins entering the Ball State Invite.
Viking Fun Fact: Following his 2-1 weekend at the Purdue Invite, Matt Ford is now tied for ninth on the all-time wins list at CSU with a 42-31 career singles record.
