Cleveland State Drops Season Finale to First-Place Scots

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University wrestling team dropped its regular season finale to Eastern Wrestling League regular-season champion Edinboro, 31-11, Saturday afternoon inside Woodling Gymnasium.

CSU won three of the first six matches against the Fighting Scots  and had chances in its remaining matches. The Vikings took leads at 174 and 184 pounds and were tied in the third period at 197, but the Scots would post key wins to clinch the match.

Junior Evan Cheek won his fifth straight EWL match with another dominating performance while redshirt freshman Ryan Ford and true freshman Georgio Poullas also collected wins Saturday.

Cleveland State fell behind early at the first two weights and was unable to recover as it trailed, 10-0, after the opening two bouts.

Cheek then turned the tide of the match. He had opened up a 6-0 lead before finishing off the pin late in the first period.

Ford brought the Vikings within one team point with a fine effort at 149. He used two first-period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead after three minutes. Starting in the down position, Ford posted a reversal to start the second and had a four-point advantage heading into the third. He was able to hold off his foe's comeback attempt, using a point of riding time to claim a 7-5 win.

Edinboro took the bout at 157 to push its team advantage to six points, but Poullas cut that in half after his win at 165.

Poullas used two takedowns and an escape to claim a 5-1 lead after the opening frame. Like Ford, he used a reversal to increase his lead to start the second period and proceeded to post two more takedowns in the frame to hold an eight-point lead after five minutes. Poullas would hang on for the win, earning a point of riding time for a 14-8 victory.

Redshirt senior Gabe Stark scored first at 174 pounds. He then fell behind by six points, a margin he cut to just two after two periods. However, his comeback effort could not pick up enough steam in the final period.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba also scored first at 184, but his match would require more than nine minutes to decide a winner. Corba wound up losing his bout in the second sudden victory session.

True freshman John Kelbly had battled back from a 4-1 deficit after one period to tie the match, 4-4, in the third period. However, he was unable to take the lead, as Edinboro claimed wins at the final two weight classes.

Cheek, who now has 21 wins overall on the year, improved to 17-6 against Division I opponents at 141 pounds. He owns 14 bonus-point wins on the season, including six pins.

Ford picked up his 10th Division I win of the season Saturday and his fifth in dual action. He finished his rookie campaign 3-3 in EWL action.

Like Ford, Poullas also notched his fifth dual win of the season Saturday and his third in EWL competition.

Cleveland State will make a return visit to Edinboro in two weeks to contest the EWL Championships. The single-day event takes place Saturday, March 3.
