Wrestlers Host Third Annual CSU Open

Jan. 27, 2002

The Cleveland State wrestling squad hosted the third annual Cleveland State Open on Saturday, with 227 grapplers from 24 schools competing.

"It was a good day of wrestling," said Head Coach Jack Effner. "This kind of event brings a lot of exposure to Cleveland State and gives the red-shirts and non-qualifiers some tough competition."

Last season Viking redshirts Russ Davie (285), Gerald Harris II (174) and Phil Mansueto (133) each took first place at the CSU Open. This year Michigan matched that performance, crowning three champions as well. Pat Owen (157), Steve Heleniak (197) and heavyweight Greg Wagner each grabbed the top spot in their weight class.

Sophomore Jason Effner (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) was the lone place winner for the Vikings. The 165-pounder took second place after losing in the finals with one-second left.
