Vikings Open Season with Intra-Squad Scrimmage

CLEELAND, Ohio - CSU jumped into the wrestling season with its annual intrasquad scrimmage on Friday (Oct. 26) at Woodling Gymnasium. The green squad defeated the white squad 40-6 in the twenty-five match contest, which served as preparation for next Saturday's (Nov 3) first meet at the Eastern Michigan Open. "I'm glad this part of the season is over," head coach Jack Effner said. "We've worked hard for the last several months, and it's time to get onto the season and wrestle somebody else." Returning NCAA qualifier, Ryan Hurley, was victorious in both of his matches as he defeated Shaun Mitchell (11-4) and won a major decision against Dan Castillo (11-2). NCAA qualifier David Armstrong, is taking a redshirt and is competing in the Sunkist Open. The freshman finished the afternoon with a 9-12 record. Freshman Eric Schwartz had good success as he defeated Jeff Schuller 7-3 in his first match, then he defeated NCAA qualifier Rashard Goff 3-2 in the second round. Other freshman that had good days were Thomas Schwartz who went 1-1 on the afternoon, and Josh Palivoda who defeated Matt Waxman 8-0 and Mike Mitchell 14-5.
"I'm thrilled with the freshman class," Effner said. "Hughes, Palivoda, and Schwartz are going to be in there right away. I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress throughout the season." Marcus Effner, an NCAA qualifier two years ago defeated both of his opponents as he defeated Nate Kmetz, 6-5 in a back and forth match, and in his second match the junior pinned Dustin Doty. 174 pound junior Gerred Tolson had a good day for the Vikings as the junior defeated Caleb Kennedy and Benny Balogh. The Vikings will travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan for the Eastern Michigan Open next Saturday (Nov. 3) at 10:00 a.m. Match Results Match 1 - 149: Ryan Hurley (green) def Shaun Mitchell (white) |
