Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team hosted Eastern Michigan in their first dual of the season tonight, falling to the Eagles, 36-6. Marcus Effner and Nick Anthony each posted victories for the Vikings in the 174 and 184 weight classes respectively.
"Tonight's meet was a good learning experience for us, especially for all of the freshmen that were in the lineup," head coach Ben Stehura said. "Every time the freshmen get on the mat it is a learning experience for them, and they always get better after every match. The freshmen held their own in the meet tonight which is a good thing going forward in the season."
The Viking wins came in the last two matches of the night, with Effner posting the first win, beating Eastern Michigan's Nick Hendrick with a last second take down that put him up 3-1. Effner put CSU on the board with three points making the score 36-3.
"Marcus is finally getting back to shape and is progressively getting better," Stehura said. "He did a great job in the third period, and that is the same with everyone tonight, they all got stronger as the rounds went on."
Anthony posted the second victory against Travis Stanback in the last match of the night, putting the final score at 36-6. Anthony had a last second escape that led him to the victory, winning the decision 1-0.
"This was a good win for Anthony tonight," Stehura said. " He did a good job through all three periods and came out with the victory. We know what we need to do moving into the Ohio State duals this weekend and I am looking forward to seeing some more progress by everyone on the team."
The Vikings return to action this Sunday (Nov. 22) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State duals. CSU will face Notre Dame at 10:00 a.m., Findlay at 12:00 noon and Ohio State at 2:00 p.m.
