CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kailey Klein scored a season-high 31 points and in the process became the all-time scoring leader in Cleveland State women's basketball history, but Loyola spoiled the party with a 74-64 win over the Vikings in the Wolstein Center on Saturday afternoon.

Klein, who also added a career-high tying 14 rebounds for her 13th career double-double, has now scored 1,877 points, moving past Dianne Foster who held the record for 26 years with 1,851 points.

"I am honored to have the scoring record here at Cleveland State, but it hurts because we weren't able to pull out the win," Klein said. "Once I got the record, I was just focused on the game and helping the team try to win any way I could. We made some errors down the stretch, but hopefully we can learn from this and move forward."

Klein's record setting basket came with 11:08 to play in the first half when senior Angel Roque found a Klein cutting to the basket for a layup.

"Having the record setting basket came from Angel made it a little more special," Klein said. "We came in together and we've been together and shared in moving the program forward."

Klein, who also had a double-double in a loss at Loyola in early January, went 8-of-20 from the field and hit 14-of-20 from the free throw line.

Her 31 points were two shy of equaling her career high of 33, set six times.

"Kailey's accomplishment is very special," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "She had a tremendous all-around game, scoring, rebounding and playing defense. It's to bad that we had to associate a loss with this special accomplishment.

"What Kailey has done during her career is remarkable and I am proud of the player that she has became. I feel that her teammates have become better players for playing with her and I am honored to have coached such a tremendous person for the last four years."

Klein nearly had a double-double in the first half, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes, but CSU still trailed going to the locker room, 32-31.

Loyola would open the second half on a 9-4 run to push the lead to eight points (43-35; 15:22), the largest lead for either team.

The Vikings battled back to cut the lead to one points (53-52) on a Shawnita Garland three-pointer with 8:29 to play, but Keisha Collins answered with a three-pointer on the other end and was fouled on the shot, giving her a four-point play, to make it 57-52.

CSU once again battled back, cutting the deficit to two points (64-62) on a Klein layup, but after a Rambler turnover, CSU gave the ball right back on a turnover of its own.

The Viking defense held, but Roque missed a three-pointer with 2:20 to play and a CSU sent Collins to the line where she hit two free throws, extending the Rambler lead to 66-62 with 2:18 left.

Janelle Adams split a pair of free throws on the other end, cutting the lead to three points, but with the shot clock winding down on the other end, Elyse VanBogaert hit a short jumper from the right wing to push the lead back to five.

A Viking turnover followed and CSU was forced to start fouling and the Ramblers hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

"It was disappointing to lose this game because I thought we had several chances to tie or take the lead and we didn't take advantage of those opportunities," Peterson Abiad said. "I thought we competed well with them until the final minutes when we made critical turnovers, missed some free throws and didn't come up with key defensive stops. And that was the difference in the game."

CSU had a 42-35 advantage on the glass and had just 14 turnovers. LU turned the ball over just 13 times.

Roque was the only other Viking in double figures with 11 points, while Stephaine Crosley added seven points and 12 rebounds. Garland had six steals.

Collins led the Ramblers with 28 points.

The Vikings are back in action on Thursday (Feb. 11) when CSU begins a two-game trip to Indiana with an 8:05 p.m. EST contest at Valparaiso.
