Vikings Compete in Youngstown State Invitational

April 19, 2002

The Cleveland State women's golfers took on St. Francis University and Youngstown State University in the Youngstown State Invitational, held at Avalon South Golf Course on Tuesday. The tournament consisted of two nine-hole rounds, in which the Vikings proceeded to card a combined score of 201-222---423.

For the second time in as many tournaments, the Vikings were paced by senior Marlayna Jacinto (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Marion L. Steele) who scored a 45-50---95 in 18 holes. Freshman Nancy Bowling (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lebanon) followed up Jacinto with a 49-51---100, while Jen Varhola (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Becca Guerra (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) carded scores of 51-58---109 and 56-63---119, respectively.

In her first appearance with the women's golf team, Ashley Schrock (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) rounded out the CSU attack with a 63-59---122. Schrock began playing with the golf team this spring after completing her second season with Cleveland State's women's basketball team.

St. Francis edged out Youngstown State in the final standing, shooting a 305 to YSU's 306. Gina Abrazzino of St. Francis led all individuals, scoring a 35-37---72 in 18 holes.

This Monday, the Vikings will host Cleveland State's first ever Women's Golf Invitational. The 36-hole stroke play tournament will be held at Legend Lake Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio, along with the CSU Men's Golf Invitational.
