ROCHESTER, Mich. – Cleveland State played to a 1-1 draw with Oakland in the first round of the Horizon League Championship, but the Golden Grizzlies advanced on penalty kicks, 8-7.
CSU is now 8-8-3 overall, while Oakland is 6-10-3.
Oakland took an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a goal by Alice Palmer who stole the ball at the top of CSU's box and beat Sarah Wood to the upper left corner from 18 yards out.
The lead didn't last long as Allie Sieradzki netted her fourth goal of the season at the 17:36 mark from 10 yards out. Katie Bainbridge started the play with a free kick from about 30 yards out and Sieradzki was able to take control of a loose ball in the box and beat Oakland goalkeeper Alison Holland.
The teams played a scoreless second half and two 10 minute overtime sessions, sending the match into a shootout where both teams scored four goals. CSU's Erin O'Toole hit the crossbar in the third round, while Serra Davis made a diving save to the left on Oakland's fifth and final shot.
After two goals by each team, Megan Barrick hit the right post with her shot, but Davis made another save to extend the shootout. Both teams scored in the ninth round, but after a CSU miss, Oakland advanced with a goal in the 10th round.
